Position Description
The City of Tacoma is establishing a civil service list for the classification of Carpenter.
Carpenters perform various skilled carpentry duties involving rough and finish carpentry necessary in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and other structures. Position normally works repairing and maintaining doors, floors, windows, partitions, bridges, and small parts of buildings; participate in the setting and installation of fences, gates, sidewalks, curbs, vaults, manholes, drains, and foundations for towers and other equipment; repairing building and maintaining tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters, and other wood equipment; installing hardware on doors, windows and related wood parts; grading lumber to determine economically appropriate material for jobs; forming and pouring concrete; participating in excavation and placement of reinforcing steel and anchor bolts.
Essential Duties:
Repair and maintain doors, floors, windows, partitions, bridges, bed beams and small parts of buildings.
Participate in the setting and installation of fences, gates, sidewalks, curbs, vaults, manholes, drains and foundations for towers and other equipment.
Repair, build and maintain tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters and other wood equipment; install hardware on doors, windows and related wood parts; grade lumber to determine economically appropriate material for job.
Form and pour concrete; participate in the excavation and placement of reinforcing steel and anchor bolts.
Perform construction and maintenance work on bridges; install new caps, sills, braces, posts, railings and deck stringers; repair and maintain dock and loading platforms.
Construct shelves and closets, screens and screen doors.
Repair and replace drywall, insulation, stairways and gutters.
Receive materials and supplies from vendors according to established procedures; prepare daily records such as materials list.
Perform hand and bench work in a carpenter shop; operate and maintain a variety of tools, equipment and machines such as saws, drills, trowels, sanders, levels and other hand and power tools; operate a City vehicle, flatbed truck and forklift.
Perform duties of Carpenter Crew Leader as assigned; attend safety meetings; observe and implement proper safety procedures.
Provide assistance in performing electrical, heating, plumbing and painting duties as assigned.
Work safely and cooperatively with other co-workers and the public.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Work includes indoor and outdoor assignments; subject to noise.
Position requires lifting, pushing, climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds.
Employees in this position may be exposed to potentially hazardous materials.

Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
AND
Five (5) years of full-time paid employment as a journey level carpenter.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience totaling a minimum of five (5) years that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of this position would qualify.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State driver's license, valid first aid card with CPR, flagging and forklift certification by the end of the probationary period and maintenance thereafter.
Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks which may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.

This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questions #6-11 reviewed and scored by a committee of subject matter experts, as the Experience and Training Test.
