Position Description:

The Middle School Humanities Teacher is passionate about what they do and who they teach. They make Social Studies (Individuals & Societies) and English (Language & Literature) come alive for their students by asking them to consider both subjects through the dual lenses of mirrors and windows, reflecting inwards and looking beyond. This teacher guides students on the path of inquiry and self-discovery to become reflective, global citizens who can delve into research, think critically, and speak and write powerfully. 

Community and strong positive relationships are essential in Middle School; therefore, the Middle School Humanities Teacher must connect with young adolescents of all backgrounds and abilities, to enable them to explore the world from multiple perspectives with eagerness and drive. Compassion and an understanding of the needs of this age group are vital to simultaneously support each student's academic and social-emotional growth and hold them accountable for their actions and choices. 

While energy, patience, and a little bit of goofiness are key elements that are indispensable for this position, the Middle School Humanities Teacher is also a team player who thrives in collaborative endeavors, both as an advisor and as a subject specialist. The creation and implementation of interdisciplinary units of inquiry that captivate, inform and stretch our students are essential components of the Middle Years Programme. While experience with the International Baccalaureate (IB) is not a prerequisite, an appreciation of criterion-based grading and the global holistic approach of the IB is important. 

Position Overview: Core Duties and Responsibilities

The Middle School Humanities Teacher: 

• teaches in alignment with the mission and philosophy of Annie Wright Schools and with the International Baccalaureate framework; 
• designs and teaches Language & Literature and Individuals & Societies in Grade 6 & 7 with an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning; employs strategies to help students develop both their oral and written voices, and engages students in authentic, scholarly research;
• collaborates with other faculty, including the Director of Middle School, student Advisors, the Middle School Counselor, and other colleagues to develop programming;
• participates in collaborative planning and faculty meetings, serves as a Middle School Advisor, and fulfills other duties as assigned.

Salary & benefits

This position offers a salary range between $60,000 and $85,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits available to the hired candidate include the following, subject to the terms of the applicable benefit plan:

• Paid sick leave (known as Wellness Days): Each regular full-time employee earns 80 hours of Wellness leave per accrual year

• Twelve (12) paid Holidays in 2024
• Fifty percent (50%) tuition remission in accordance with school policy. All fees and incidental expenses are the sole responsibility of the employee-parent
• All children of benefited employees of AWS, who are currently enrolled at AWS, are eligible for extended day services at no charge when school is in session. Charges apply for faculty in-service days or similar days 
• A 403(b) retirement plan with a 6% company match with a 3% employee contribution

Qualifications

The Middle School Humanities Teacher will demonstrate key elements of the expertise and experiences listed above. The Middle School Humanities Teacher: 

• holds a BA in English, Education, or a related field;
• is familiar with independent schools and/or the International Baccalaureate framework;
• demonstrates success as a teacher at the Middle School level, strengths as a teacher of writing and research, and an interest in interdisciplinary curriculum development;
• demonstrates enthusiasm for working with Middle School-aged students and the ability to form authentic relationships with them; 
• is a strong communicator and empathetic listener;
• practices cultural humility in personal interactions;
• is innovative;
• is organized and flexible;
• demonstrates proficiency in educational technologies;

• is eligible to work in the United States.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
• Must be able to move comfortably around a classroom, accessing materials and assisting students as needed;
• Must be able to communicate and exchange information with students, other teachers, and families.
