Organizational Unit Overview


The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.

Job Duties


A part-time, permanent staff nurse is needed to work in the Acute Care After Hours Clinic to provide nursing support for the Ambulatory Pediatric patients with responsibilities including providing direct patient care, coordination and management of efficient clinic operations, and to serve as a resource person for the education of learners. Nurse will assess symptoms and utilize clinical-decision support tools and telephone triage standards of practice to determine appropriate care needed. The individual in this position will perform a variety of tasks with some detail, requiring general understanding and skill in the application of work procedures. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure that patient needs are met efficiently and effectively. Position requires availability to work weekdays, weekends, and holiday hours. Hours of clinic operation are from Monday - Sunday, 5:30pm - 9:30pm, 365 days/year.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). Minimum Education/Experience


Graduation from state-accredited school of professional nursing and licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation


State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education


Prefer one year of pediatric and/or adult nursing experience

BLS certification

Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills, prefer telephone triage experience

License or Certification required by the Department


State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License
