Assistant Specialist I/II - Giulivi Lab

Position Overview:
A reasonable estimate for this position is $4,933.33 per month, at step 1, or $5,208.33 per month at step 2.

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The role of this position is to make significant and creative contributions to research on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial function in neurological diseases. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the specific area of altered pathways leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and their contribution to the onset or morbidity of neurological and neurodegenerative human disorders. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork, and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to participate in the planning of research and educational programs. The Specialist will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) but may obtain permission by exception or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding. The Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion based on three basic criteria outlined below.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

The Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using three basic criteria outlined below.

I. Research in Specialized Areas (85% Effort)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating mitochondrial bioenergetics in neurological conditions and neurodegeneration. This individual will select appropriate molecular methods and techniques for the goals of the project. The research program requires expertise in primary human cell culture techniques, assessment of activities of the electron transport chain complexes and mitochondrial enzymes, molecular techniques used to study gene expression and function (including siRNA technology, overexpression), western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, and imaging techniques (confocal microscopy). Experience with quality controls assessments and complex statistical analyses. It is expected that this individual will complete and maintain proficiency in laboratory safety and biohazard training and implement their use with the team.
The Specialist will be responsible for writing grant reports for funding agencies (such as NIH, Department of Defense, Morris Animal Foundation, among others) on projects within the area of expertise as requested by PIs and for writing peer review manuscripts in areas of expertise and reviews/comments on manuscripts.
Evaluation of performance in research activities or in outreach activities as deemed applicable to the individual project in specialized area, as documented by any of the following:
1) Publications that acknowledge the Specialist's significant and meaningful contributions to the work.
2) Publications on which the Specialist is an author.
3) Active dissemination of information through laboratory meetings, informal instruction, presentations, etc. both on campus or at local meetings stemming from the Specialist's research accomplishments. Responsible for writing grant reports for agencies on projects within the area of expertise as requested by PIs and for writing peer review manuscripts in areas of expertise and reviews/comments on manuscripts.
4) Working with undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds in conducting experiments using techniques in a safe and rigorous manner and expertise in maintaining lab safety protocols.

II. Professional Competence and Activity (10% Effort)
A. Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations such as ASBMB, Autism Speaks, SFARI, Mitochondrial Biology Group at NIH, FASEB, Society for Biological Psychiatry.
B. Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

III. University and Public Service (5% Effort)
A. May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry or biotechnology organizations, state and federal agencies (e.g., NIH), and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise (e.g., Autism Speaks, SFARI).
B. Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus, and other University entities, as appropriate.
