We work with some of the top research organizations and facilities in the country including multiple institutes at the National Institutes of health (NIH).  

 

Axle Informatics is currently seeking an experienced Principal Linux System Engineer/Architect to join a growing infrastructure team supporting our federal client. The position is in North Bethesda, MD. ( hybrid or remote ) 

 

Responsibilities:  

• Lead a Linux team supporting a complex Linux based computing infrastructure for a scientific research center and p rovide guidance and direction to other engineers as required  
• Set up and manage Linux systems, applications and environments and ensure those systems comply with Government security standards  
• Identify and improve functionality of different monitoring tools and techniques required for the support of a complex computing infrastructure  
• Provide insight on a data management strategy to allow better access from different data sources across Linux clients on-prem and in the cloud  
• Provide support to lifecycle management tools to manage deploy, configuration, and patching for different Linux systems and distributions  
• Automate system patching, configuration management, and compliance auditing using, Ansible or other automated CM products  
• Maintain High Availability infrastructure, ensuring security compliances and high-level performance while minimizing service interruption  
• Develop, implement, and maintain a secure Linux baseline from existing policies  
• Support the process to develop and maintain system security plans, contingency plans, preparing Authority-to-Operate (ATO)/MOU packages.  
• Perform administrative functions related to monitoring, support, project activities, and capacity planning  
• Create and maintain documentation for procedures, configurations, and programs  
• Contribute to the various GenAI initiatives across NCATS  

 

Qualifications:  

• Minimum 10 years of Linux Engineering experience  

• Minimum 10 years of experience working in a Production Support environment  
• Extensive knowledge in implementing NIST and Federal Security standards on-premise and cloud environments.  
• Experience implementing security tools such as Netsparker , HP Fortify, Splunk, and application patching for vulnerabilities.  
• At least one Industry-relevant certification is mandatory (Linux+, RHCSA, OCP, GCUX, etc.) 
• Excellent verbal and communication skills.  
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to clearly communicate and the ability to work as part of a team.  
• Proficiency in business productivity tools, such as, Word, Excel, Power-Point, Visio, SharePoint, Teams, etc.  
• Robust understanding of IT practices, service management, governance frameworks, and industry standards (Ex: ITIL, ITSM, COBIT, ISO).  
• Ability to analyze complex data and present findings in a clear and easily understood manner.  
• Self-motivated, takes ownership, and drives tasks to completion with a sense of urgency  
• Sound judgment, positive attitude, and creative outlook required .  
• NIH or other Government experience preferred
