The Preschool Teacher at Springfield First is responsible for the children attending the preschool, ages 3 to 5, by providing an environment based on Christian values, that will help children and families develop mentally, socially, physically, and spiritually. 

This individual will be the primary teacher in the classroom and implement the curriculum through daily lesson planning. They will provide supervision and classroom assignments to volunteers. They are required to have a college degree in early childhood, education, or a related degree. This individual will also provide scheduling and coordinate information and operations for the preschool classes with other teachers, assistants and parent/guardians.

The learning environment vision is to be play-based, which is intended to develop the whole child. This is accomplished through following the curiosity of the child then selecting activities that spark engagement through play, exploration, and inquiry.

The preschool uses an emergent curriculum and the Creative Curriculum, which is intended to educate children with activities that are designed to build confidence, social interaction, and develop skills to be successful in their future education. An assessment tool is included that will connect observations to standards, and milestones will be shared with the parent/guardians of the students. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and aligns with the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Formal religious training is not included in the curriculum; however the concepts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control will be included in routines and activities. Contrary values will be excluded.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience as a preschool teacher or other teaching experience with young children
• A solid understanding of the principles of child development and the Illinois Early Learning Standards
• Familiarity with safety and sanitation guidelines for classrooms
• Excellent communication and instructional skills
• Ability to act as mediator between children
• Cool-tempered, friendly and reliable
• Balance between a creative mind and a practical acumen
• Certification in child CPR
• BSc/BA in education or relevant field
• Valid license to practice profession

Responsibilities

• Establish and enforce rules of behavior for children in their classrooms
• Ensure basic needs are met for all children
• Provide tools and resources for children to use and explore during learning and play activities
• Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of children
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with children and parents
• Manage classroom activities including lessons, play, breaks and meals
• Utilize Conscious Discipline strategies to help in the interactions between children
• Help children reach developmental milestones through observing and creating play invitations
• Track childrens’ progress through observations and report to parents
• Maintain a clean and tidy classroom
• Help children reach developmental milestones
• Collaborate with others to implement lesson plans
• Encourage children to interact with each other to develop social skills
• Provide appropriate supervision for children at all times
• Maintain inventory system for classroom materials and supplies
• Facilitate various activities for children including songs, games and storytelling
• Adhere to health/safety and sanitation procedures

This position reports to the Executive Director of Springfield First, however specific directions are provided by the EarlyLife Director.
