Position overview
Position title: Kroeker Lab: Marine Ecology Junior Specialist
Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, REPRESENTED SPECIALIST SERIES FISCAL YEAR . The starting salary for this position is $51,300.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description

The Kroeker Lab () at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Marine Ecology Junior Specialist. Under the direction of Dr. Kristy Kroeker the junior specialist will participate in research of sustainable aquaculture.

Responsibilities include organizing logistics for local and remote field missions with different collaborators; hiking over challenging terrain while carrying up to 50 pounds in weight; performing sampling in estuaries (sometimes on SCUBA); deploying and maintaining oceanographic equipment and sensors; sorting and identifying seaweed and other species. Given the nature of the position, the junior specialist must successfully work independently and as part of a team, and they must consistently demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills.

Applicants with experience in sustainable agroecology, aquaculture, and marine botany as well as formal training in kayaking (e.g., American Canoe Association courses) and wilderness first response are strongly encouraged to apply.
