Director of Human Resources

Summary:

A leading national nonprofit organization, renowned for its significant contributions in the field of education, is seeking a Director of Human Resources. This role involves planning, leading, directing, developing, and coordinating the policies and activities of the Human Resources programs. Reporting to the President & CEO, the HR Director will be instrumental in developing and leading strategies for staffing, internal communication processes, performance management, and leadership and professional development. The role also includes refreshing core human resource functions such as hiring processes, onboarding, and performance management.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Supervisory Responsibilities
• This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Collaborate with senior leadership to align staffing, recruiting, and retention strategies with organizational goals.
• Develop and implement HR policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support compliance and strategic needs.
• Manage recruitment processes, including screening, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding.
• Oversee human resource programs, including compensation, benefits, leave, disciplinary matters, disputes, performance evaluation, and training.
• Address employee complaints and engage independent HR services when necessary.
• Develop and execute hiring and talent management best practices.
• Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of HR trends and legal changes.
• Collaborate with the finance department on staffing and HR budgets.
• Serve as a trusted resource for staff, handling employee relations with professionalism and discretion.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Required Experience and Attributes:
• Comprehensive knowledge of HR laws and practices across various areas including benefits, compensation, workforce planning, and employment.
• Strong organizational skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on empathy and discretion in sensitive situations.
• Experience in strategic planning, learning, and organizational change management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with HR information systems like ADP, Paychex, or Paycom.
• Experience in the nonprofit sector is a plus.
• Background in American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal Nations or organizations is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Commitment to the organization's mission and values.

Education
• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum of five years of human resource management experience.
• SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential preferred.
