Position Summary/Description:

This position is 100% on-site and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.

This position is directly responsible for the safe and prompt pick up of equipment and supplies from UNC Departments, UNC Hospital and satellite Departments which are not located on UNC campus. Due to the nature of the supplies and equipment being picked up, it is essential that the person in this position possess a commercial driver's license, be able to drive a medium size box truck, and be able to lift medium to heavy weights. Be able to separate and secure items properly with the tie downs straps if necessary. Account individually for all asset management tagged items $5,000 or more.

Work in this class involves the operation of vehicles and/or equipment in support of State agencies and universities. Positions may operate a variety of vehicles/equipment in the performance of daily tasks, or may specialize in the operation of specific types of vehicles/equipment. Program areas supported may include but are not limited to public transportation, grounds maintenance, transportation of juvenile offenders, solid waste hauling, mail transport, cargo transport, forest fire fighting, reforestation, and hydrogeological drilling. Positions may supervise temporaries or court-secured individuals in the performance of tasks.

Safely and skillfully operates specialized vehicles and/or equipment, which may include but is not limited to tractor trailer, bulldozer, backhoe, and hydrogeological drilling equipment, in the performance of recurring tasks with limited variety and established parameters. Safely and skillfully operates standard (Level I) vehicles and/or equipment in combination with considerable independence and variation in assignments, requiring a good understanding of organizational objectives. Plan and decide on best routes and schedules according to broad guidelines/parameters. Make decisions concerning weight and load distribution of cargo. Performs minor preventive maintenance. Assesses safety conditions and resolves problems. Participates in safety inspections and drills.

Education and Experience:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
