Job description

Position OverviewThe Jewish Studies Program invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for a part-time lecturer position in Jewish Studies. We are especially interested in instructors who have the ability to teach 1 or 2 courses per semester on topics related to Judaism and Jewish religious practices, and/or the Holocaust. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty and are usually paid on a per-course basis. A primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service.

Part- to full-time temporary and/or regular lecturer and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses. Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s).

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses consistent with departmental instructional needs.


The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.Job DescriptionTeach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester. Courses may be undergraduate or graduate level and may be taught face-to-face, hybrid or online.

100% Lecturer duties

75% - Teaching

• Teach a specific number of 3 credit-hour courses each semester. This includes 3 in-class academic hours per week for each 3 credit-hour course.
• Preparation of classroom materials including exams, quizzes and other assessment measures; grading, copying and filing.
• Lecturers are expected to manage Blackboard, keep student records, and submit all relevant course records.

15% - Office hours and other appointments with students

• A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days.
• The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.


10% - Other
• Attendance at required mentoring meetings and faculty meetings as needed and determined by the Director.
• Submission of yearly reports as needed and determined by the Director.
• Adherence to departmental, College, and University policies.

Required QualificationsEvaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
  1. M.A. and/or Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or related field; a rabbinical degree may be relevant.
  2. College teaching experience, evidence of teaching competence (e.g., course evaluations; supervisor ratings).
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. in Jewish Studies or a closely related field.
  2. Experience in teaching multiple semesters of college-level undergraduate courses.
  3. Experience in teaching the specific introductory course to be assigned.
