Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The UNC School of Medicine has a rich tradition of excellence and care with a mission to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians, and others whom we serve. The UNC TEACCH Autism Program is housed within the School of Medicine. Started in the late 1960s, the UNC TEACCH Autism Program’s mission is to create and disseminate community-based services, training programs and research to enhance the quality of life for autistic individuals and their families across the lifespan. UNC TEACCH currently operates 7 outpatient clinics across North Carolina, a residential program, and an employment program. In addition, UNC TEACCH has a robust community-based research program and internationally acclaimed training program. We are committed to providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research. We will cultivate outstanding teaching and research faculty, and we will recruit outstanding students and trainees from highly diverse backgrounds to create a socially responsible, highly skilled workforce.

Research: We develop and support clinically and community oriented outstanding research programs and resources. We provide opportunities for collaboration among disciplines across and beyond the University as well as collaboration with community stakeholders to support meaningful and outstanding research that directly impacts autistic individuals and their families.

Position Summary The University of North Carolina TEACCH Autism Program invites applicants for a tenured or tenure track research faculty position. The successful candidate will have experience as an autism researcher with expertise fitting TEACCH’s mission of creating and disseminating community-based services for autistic individuals. A history of research across a variety of community-based activities is appropriate including expertise in implementation science, dissemination science, and/or clinical trials research. This is a full-time, tenured or tenure track faculty position with rank commensurate with background and experience in the Department of Psychiatry, UNC School of Medicine.

The research program at TEACCH is dedicated to creating and implementing community-based diagnostic and intervention services for autistic individuals across the lifespan. During 2022, faculty had active foundation and federal grants totaling more than $16,000,000. Current research programs examine access to care for Black toddlers, the efficacy of transition to adulthood interventions, implementation outcomes for TEACCH’s educator continuing education program, the comparative effectiveness of two community-based mental health interventions for autistic adults, the employment outcomes and support needs for autistic adults, and the physical and healthcare service needs for autistic adults. Research infrastructure at TEACCH includes a research database of more than 14,000 individuals diagnosed by TEACCH and a research registry supported by the UNC Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center that includes nearly 8,000 autistic individuals who are interested in participating in research.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum requirements for this position include completion of a Ph.D. or similar doctoral level degree in Psychology or related Health Sciences discipline with an established track-record in clinical trials/dissemination/ implementation research.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience The successful candidate should have experience and expertise in developing and translating evidence-based interventions to practice and/or policies in community settings.
