Job Description
The Registered Nurse (RN) House Supervisor plays a critical role in overseeing nursing staff and operations during designated shifts within a healthcare facility. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care, facilitates communication among departments, and responds to emergent situations to maintain safe and efficient hospital operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and direction to nursing staff, ancillary departments, and support personnel during assigned shifts, serving as a resource and mentor for clinical practice and decision-making.
- Coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, collaborating with nursing units, physicians, and case management to optimize bed utilization and patient flow.
- Conducts rounds throughout the facility to assess patient care activities, address patient and staff concerns, and monitor compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Responds to emergent situations and medical alerts, coordinating rapid response teams and initiating appropriate interventions to stabilize patients and ensure timely access to critical care resources.
- Collaborates with nursing unit managers and charge nurses to address staffing needs, workload distribution, and staffing assignments based on patient acuity and census fluctuations.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, participating in shift handoffs, patient care conferences, and interdepartmental meetings to promote continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
- Provides support and guidance to nursing staff in resolving patient care issues, addressing conflicts, and implementing evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety and quality of care.
- Conducts performance evaluations, provides feedback, and identifies opportunities for staff development and continuing education to enhance nursing competency and promote professional growth.
- Assists in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives, patient safety measures, and regulatory compliance activities, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards and best practices in nursing care.
- Maintains accurate documentation of incidents, events, and operational activities, preparing reports and documentation as required for internal review and regulatory agencies.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice, with a minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience, including experience in leadership or supervisory roles.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree preferred, or willingness to pursue higher education in nursing leadership or management.
- Advanced certification in Nursing Administration or Leadership (e.g., Nurse Executive - NE-BC, Nurse Manager and Leader - CNML) preferred.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and delegate responsibilities effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, resolve conflicts, and foster a culture of teamwork and mutual respect.
- Sound clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to assess complex situations, analyze data, and implement effective solutions to achieve organizational goals.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement methodologies, with a commitment to ensuring compliance and continuous performance improvement.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) and other technology tools to support nursing practice, documentation, and operational management.
- Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as required to provide 24/7 coverage and support to nursing staff and hospital operations.
