Manager of Shelter Operations

Our goals quickly broadened from the mere provision of food and shelter and simple survival, to understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless.
Columbus House, along with its core of loyal supporters, friends, and volunteers, has remained committed to fulfilling its mission: "To serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, by providing shelter and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence."
Purpose Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the Manager of Shelter Operations provides leadership and oversight to Emergency Shelter Programs including Main Shelter and Warming Center providing residential coordination to literally homeless individuals in the Greater New Haven area. This position plays a key role in collaborating with government, local mental health and substance abuse service providers, housing providers and GNH CAN systems.
Duties and Responsibilities - Provide supervision, leadership and direction to all Emergency Shelter staff ensuring consistency and continuity of services for service recipients.
- Network and collaborate with the Greater New Haven Coordinated Access Network and Regional providers to coordinate services for recipients.
- Conduct weekly house meetings.
- Complete all required reports and documentation on time and with complete details.
- Attending regularly scheduled supervision, team, shelter, or staff meetings as requested.
- On Call responsibilities
- Create an environment that is welcoming and provides an enriching experience for all service recipients.
- Ensures that services are carried out with fidelity to each practice.
- Monitors program budget and ensures adherence and fiscal integrity.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Provide on sight support to Emergency Shelter between the hours of 2pm-10pm
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of three years’ experience working in a social service, mental health, or substance abuse agency in an administrative or management role.
- Ability to work with improvement of teams and foster teamwork.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong command of MS Office software modules
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered-Planning, Harm Reduction, Trauma Informed and Gender Specific Care and Housing First philosophies and models.
- Experience serving persons with histories of mental health, substance abuse and homelessness.
- Valid drivers’ license with a good driving history and daily access to an automobile
- Complete knowledge base of all aspects of the delivery of residential services for the homeless population
- General understanding of crisis intervention, confidentiality, boundaries, universal precautions
Supervisor: Director of Emergency Services
Salary range: $55,000
Schedule: Monday – Friday 2:00pm- 10:00pm
