Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR MA/MS Degree

  • Knowledge of silviculture and forest operations as practiced on federal and other lands in the western U.S., and the how forest and fuel management plans are developed and executed in the national forest system in particular.
  • Knowledge of parameterizing and operating the FVS model, and its limitations; experience interpreting FVS output and summarizing management outcomes.
  • Knowledge of wildfire management, including hazardous fuel treatments, wildfire effects, wildfire management costs, and wildfire damages.
  • Knowledge of Forest Service policies and procedures, including those embodied in the Wildfire Crisis Strategy, sufficient to ensure that mechanical and other kinds of fuel treatments, silvicultural plans, and programs are consistent with such policies and procedures.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, Power Point, Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)

Duties:

The main duty of the position will involve scoping and studying the plans and prospects for forest ecosystem management that adds a fire focus in selected WCS landscapes and encoding these in FVS simulations to enhance understanding of prospective management outcomes for fire and fuel goals, other resource management goals, and supplies of merchantable and nonmerchantable woody feedstock and the relationship between those and wood processing facility location and capacity.

  • Simulate the application of the wildfire crisis strategy in these priority landscapes using the BioSum framework and the Forest Vegetation Simulator to estimate likely yields of both merchantable wood and potentially usable residues the can be delivered to biohubs, if built, costs and revenues associated with treatment, and realization of treatment objectives and how treatment accomplishment changes over time as stands pursue post-treatment trajectories with and without encounters with fire.   35%
  • Engagements with forest and fuel managers in selected Priority Landscapes to document a) management goals relating to forests targeted for treatment under the wildfire crisis strategy, b) characteristics of stands selected for treatment, c) desired conditions post-treatment with respect to fire resistance and other stand attributes considered important to monitor, d) parameters for the silvicultural prescriptions to be considered, and e) economic and operational parameters required to accurately simulate the application of such treatments.   30%
  • Help the research team develop research and technology transfer publications, presentations and other forms of translational research products for use with a range of audiences including at meetings and briefings.   25%
  • Communicate findings with managers in the selected landscapes, regional partners, and research partners by participating, advising and consulting on pre-fire planning and fuel treatment issues in light of findings.   10%

  • Travel Requirements: May be required to drive to remote forestry locations.
  • Overnight travel: Up to 3 days per month
