HIRING SALARY: Unpaid


HOURS: Flexible: 3-12 hours per week

BACKGROUND: Tallahassee Community College's Adult Education (AE) Department provides a range of instructional programs that help adults get the basic skills they need to be productive workers, family members, and citizens. The major program areas are Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED® Preparation, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). These programs emphasize basic skills such as reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and English language proficiency. The AE Program also helps adult learners gain the knowledge and skills they need to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. We seek individuals who have practical work experience and backgrounds to help facilitate a rich learning environment for diverse adult education populations.


MAJOR FUNCTION: General responsibilities include: tutoring students one-one-one or in small groups according to Florida Adult Education Curriculum Frameworks and assigned lesson plans, assisting the lead instructor in the classroom as needed, and adhere to all College policies and procedures and division and departmental procedures. The selected candidates identified for this position will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check, which may include fingerprinting.


MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of relevant experience teaching and/or tutoring adults or young adults related skills such as reading, writing, language arts, math, science, social studies, digital literacy, career and education planning, and test-taking skills.


SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING: Ability to instruct and/or tutor the adult education content areas. Skilled in tutoring students and facilitating a rich learning environment for diverse populations. A sincere desire to help students maximize their academic and personal potential. Ability to use a variety of strategies that meet varying abilities of adult students, including differentiated instruction. Knowledge of adult learning theory and practice. Ability to communicate to adult students in an effective manner. Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its implications for the department. Ability to work independently or as a part of a team, and make independent decisions. Ability to work and communicate with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Ability to be self-motivated, self-directed and creative. Excellent human relationship skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effective, verbally and in writing, to other key stakeholders. Ability to interact with other staff appropriately.
