SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION
Basic purpose of position : Perform the essential inspection and repair functions necessary to prepare railcars for transportation. Associates designated as a "Senior Mechanic" have mastered the skills required of a "Mechanic" and are generally required to maintain the appropriate welding certification to make welding repairs . "Senior mechanics" are able to perform essentially error-free work without direct supervision.
Expectation : We expect all associates to be committed to a high standard of safety, be willing and able to comply with all safety policies/rules and willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Individuals performing this function must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Job Performance without equipment damage is essential to meeting our customers. Safety, quality and production requirements.
Responsibilities :
- Maintain an assortment of personal tools (type determined by manager);
- Perform authorized repairs to customer equipment meeting AAR specifications;
- Lubricate railcars and stencil lubrication date on the railcar;
- Accurately record, either electronically or in writing, all repairs;
- Assist, as required, in the "prepping" of railcars, this may include the use of backpack blowers, push brooms, vacuums and various scraping devices to remove all debris and other non-hazardous contaminates from inside the railcar;
- Inspect and assist in opening and closing railcar doors;
- Determine if railcar or securement devices need lubrication if lubrication is required, assist in the lubrication of hinge decks, ratchets, and any securement devices;
- Qualified associate may be required to perform and document customer preventive maintenance inspections/repairs;
- Operate various types of mechanical equipment, including but not limited to, small farm type tractors, all-terrain vehicles, pick-up trucks and panel vans;
- Maintain accountability and maintenance for all assigned equipment;
- Perform housekeeping duties as required by site management;
- Must be able to work mandatory overtime hours when operating requirements or other business needs of Road & Rail cannot be fulfilled during regular business hours;

Additional responsibilities for associates working on Multi-Level Railcars:
- Assist in raising and lowering hinged railcar decks;
- Inspect, repair, install and remove bridge plates.
Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED or ability .
Experience Requirements: Mechanical aptitude.
Skills, Licenses, Certification, and/or Special Training:
- Must maintain a valid state drivers license if required to operate company equipment;
- Qualified under D15.1 American Welding Society (AWS) certification (Senior Repairmen);
- Meet and maintain all requirements contained in the Conditions of Employment policy.
Physical, Mental & Sensory Requirements:
- Ability to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and noisy conditions;
- Ability to occasionally work in areas with limited lighting;
- Ability to occasionally climb, using various types of ladders, to heights in excess of 16 feet;
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 35 lbs;
- Ability to occasionally work in areas with less than 12 inches of vertical clearance;
- Ability to frequently bend at waist crouch for periods of time up to 1 minute;
- Constantly required to use bending, twisting, walking motions on uneven surfaces throughout the entire work shift;
- Ability to occasionally apply opposing forces (one arm pushing while the other arm pulls) sustaining pressure while bent at the waist with hands below the knees;
- Ability to occasionally walk up to 3 miles in 5 hours while bending, squatting and twisting to perform Train Inspections;
- Ability to sustain pressure in awkward positions-occasionally overhead for extended periods up to 2 minutes at a time for a total up to 2 hours per day;
- Must be able to hear work or safety instructions verbally communicated in a normal speaking voice;
- Must be able to work independently;
- Must be able to properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.
Additional requirement for associates working on Multi-Level Railcars:
- Must meet OSHA respirator use requirements if required;
- Ability to frequently open railcar end doors using pulling back force of 90 lbs and pushing force of 68 lbs;
- Ability to occasionally lift above shoulder height a weight of up to 50 pounds;
- Possess the equilibrium and ability to frequently cross 3-4 foot open spans at heights up to 16 feet.
Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job. Road & Rail Services requires a post-offer motor vehicle reference check, background check, and employment & military (if applicable) verification required.
