Job description
The Apprentice is a member of Facilities Operation and performs tasks in support of a wide variety of plumbing maintenance activities. The Apprentice performs assigned duties under direction by supervision, lead plumbers and journey level shop personnel.
This structured apprenticeship program consists of four years of on the job training combined with four years classroom instruction at an approved vocational-technical school (2-3 evenings/week, during the academic year). Maintains good standing as an apprentice by successfully completing all education and on-the-job requirements as outlined in the department’s Apprenticeship Agreement. The incumbent follows University rules and regulations at all times.
Candidates applying for this position must pass a mechanical aptitude test in order to be considered for an interview.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following; other duties may be assigned.
- As directed, the Apprentice assists in effectively and safely performing a wide range of plumbing tasks, including the troubleshooting, repair, restoration, and modification of campus plumbing systems and equipment, in accordance with the apprenticeship program on-the-job training requirements.
- Supplements practical trade experience by attending vocational / technical trade school during non-business hours, following a defined program of apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses.
- With guidance, carries out routine plumbing work such as preventive maintenance testing and inspections.
- Performs additional assignments which may include overtime, after hours, and special events. Available for emergency call backs as necessary.
- Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards.
- Communicates clearly and effectively with co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing. Maintains accurate log of daily tasks and effectively utilizes the department computerized maintenance management software program to fully document work activities.
- Performs work safely and follows all university safe work rules and practices.
- When snowstorms occur, the apprentice is an “Essential Employee” who is mandated to assist in the removal of snow and the de-icing of walks and steps.

- High school diploma or possess an equivalency (GED).
- Ability to perform all essential duties in a satisfactory manner.
- A technical aptitude for learning plumbing trade skills.
- Possess the ability to effectively follow directions in a consistent and effective manner.
- Ability to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the apprenticeship program.
- Possess a basic understanding of safe work practices in a trade shop environment, and follow all shop safe work rules, procedures and practices.
- Ability to follow the department’s customer service standards.
- Possess the ability to learn and understand technical documentation related to the plumbing technical field.
- Possess a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to work independently and in teams.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.
- Ability to learn computer basics and be able to work with the department’s software programs.

- work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
- Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
