Job description
This position works with the Director of Special Education and the Instructional Specialists to ensure that the instructional program, for the division's students eligible for special education and related services, meets the needs of these students; that staff are prepared to provide academic, functional, and behavioral intervention to identified students through staff development, consultation, and participation in division-wide efforts; and that the division's practices for determining students eligible to receive services are consistent with federal and state regulations and mandates.
- Attends and participates in the New Horizons Regional Education Center's (NHREC) administrative meetings, Region II administrative meetings, principal's meetings as requested, Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) meetings, , and large group Student Services Leadership Team meetings.
- Provides division-wide technical assistance related to writing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Attends IEP meetings as needed.
- Provides division-wide technical assistance with the eligibility process. Oversees activities related to the revision of any eligibility criteria.
- Provides division-wide technical assistance in all special education instructional issues, assessments, evaluations, and researched-based instructional strategies.
- Oversees all activities related to writing IEPs and establishing eligibility meetings for students in public, private, and residential programs.
- Oversees the alternate assessment programs (Virginia Alternate Assessment Program-VAAP, Virginia Grade Level Assessment-VGLA, Virginia Substitute Evaluation Program-VSEP).
- Participates in all SEAC meetings and is the second contact from the department of Special Education after the Director of Special Education.
- Provides leadership for the Special Education department's staff development plans.
- Oversees the Wilson Reading Program and provides leadership to the Instructional Specialist assigned to the Wilson Reading Program.
- Provides leadership and coordination to the Non-violent Crisis Intervention program.
- Provides leadership to the Autism Resource Team.
- Supervises and evaluates the itinerant teacher for the hearing impaired.
- Supervises and evaluates the teacher/coordinator at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail (VPRJ).
- Supervises and evaluates the Parent Resource Center's (PRC) parent coordinator.
- Consults with private schools and coordinates special education services of parentally-placed private school students.
- Provides input to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) annual plan for instructional purposes.
- Provides leadership and coordination for services for students requiring extended school year (ESY).
- Liaison to the early childhood special education program.
- Liaison to the general equivalency diploma (GED) program.
- Oversees the development and revision of any departmental handbooks.
- Oversees the coordination of the Dream Catchers program.
- Models the WJCC Strategic Plan Values: Individualism, Integrity, Innovation, Accountability and Collaboration.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
