About the Department:
The Office of Admissions recruits and enrolls applicants to George Mason University, including freshmen, transfers, graduate and non-degree students.
About the Position:
The International Admissions Counselor assists with all aspects of the international admissions and recruitment process, including the coordination and evaluation of applications, counseling of prospective international students, and international recruitment travel as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Processes international applications and makes domicile decisions; analyzes and evaluates undergraduate admission applications and foreign credentials and makes appropriate admissions decision following current policies and procedures. Utilizes available technology to ensure applications and associated materials are processed in a timely fashion with high rate of accuracy. Remains current regarding international admission trends and university policy. Decisions are to be timely, thoughtful, and consistent.
- Actively recruits new international students by attending assigned international recruitment activities; contacts and travels to schools, colleges, advising centers, etc.; meets with prospective students and their families; conducts presentations that highlight George Mason University. Schedules and attends college fairs and high school visits, engage in appropriate follow-up activities with prospective students and applicants met during recruitment cycle, and research and develop new recruitment activities. Books hotels and flights as needed and submits travel authorizations and reimbursements in a timely manner.
- Provides customer service support via phone, email, and walk-in basis by counseling international applicants regarding academic opportunities, admission requirements, status of application, immigration, and other related issues that arise for Mason, Mason Korea, and INTO Mason. All inquiries are to be handled with care, respect, attention to detail, and resolved in a timely manner.
- Develops and maintains working relationships with international high school counselors, Embassy officials, and U.S. education advisors, as well as on campus offices such as Registrar, INTO Mason, Mason Korea, partnership programs, and other key constituencies. Ongoing communications (through varying methods) are to be established and carried out to ensure effective performance of other aforementioned duties.
- Participates in day-to-day operational activities and processes of the admissions office, attends admissions office-sponsored programs and events, and performs other related duties as assigned. Attends all admissions-sponsored events such as open houses or international luncheons, and assists with planning and logistics as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Experience providing effective customer service;
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills;
- Knowledge of basic computer applications and equipment;
- Ability to effectively communicate with culturally and ethnically diverse populations;
- Ability to use learned procedures to help teach and train students and new staff;
- Willingness and ability to learn office/university procedures;
- Possess a valid passport; and
- Ability to travel internationally and within the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some related professional experience resulting in knowledge of international admissions process (typically one or more years);
- Experience living or working abroad;
- Experience with Banner and/or Salesforce;
- Knowledge of international education systems and credential evaluation; and
- Bilingual.
