Job description
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Program Manager to join the IDEA Office. The DEI Program Manager is responsible for advancing the initiatives, programs, and activities related to our IDEA strategic framework, specifically the action plans and day-to-day support of Berkeley Lab's Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). This key position provides thought partnership, guidance, and support related to alignment, governance, communications, and budgets. The Program Manager also collaborates with partners and stakeholders, including senior leadership, ERG Executive Sponsors, Human Resources, Strategic Communications, Areas/Divisions, subject matter experts, and external organizations. The ideal candidate is consultative and collaborative, forward-thinking, solutions-focused and a creative problem-solver in driving program results.
The IDEA Office is responsible for developing and driving Berkeley Lab's strategy to advance inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability (IDEA) for our workforce, workplace, and the communities we serve and interact with. This strategy includes integrating and implementing IDEA principles and actions throughout the talent life cycle and institutional processes and practices, in collaboration with internal partners and stakeholders. The IDEA Office serves as a thought leader with Berkeley Lab leaders and teams to sustain a culture of welcoming, belonging, and fairness where all employees are engaged and feel safe to be their authentic selves. This work requires an understanding of internal and external IDEA trends and best practices, and designing and deploying data-informed solutions.
What You Will Do:
- Develop and drive programs and initiatives aligned with IDEA framework and strategy, in close partnership with the Chief DEI Officer and IDEA Team.
- Provide program leadership, guidance, and support to ERGs and their leaders, including charter and bylaws development and execution, governance and membership, budget management, communications, initiatives and events, and day-to-day consultation and operations.
- Support and coach ERG leaders as a trusted advisor to enhance leadership and professional development skills, while providing technical expertise in planning, execution, and evaluating success of programs, projects, and initiatives. Facilitate group strategy or planning sessions with and for ERG leaders for skill development and employee engagement.
- Establish and communicate relevant project plans, timelines, budgets, and tracking sheets for various efforts, effectively managing risks, and providing appropriate tools and resources.
- Foster teamwork, collaboration, and a sense of belonging among and within groups, facilitating crucial conversations and conflict resolution as needed.
- Facilitate partnerships between ERGs, internal partners, and external organizations to grow and support a robust and diverse talent pipeline, advance outreach efforts, and enhance Berkeley Lab's brand image reputation as an employer of choice.
- Facilitate the education of ERGs around the role of Human Resources and available resources, enabling them to navigate talent-related policies, practices, compliance, and support for employees.
- Build solid and effective relationships with senior leadership and other key partners and stakeholders to ensure buy-in and support of Lab-wide IDEA priorities.
- Engage in awareness efforts for supervisors and managers to better understand the value proposition of ERGs; deliver training and provide coaching to promote and enhance inclusive leadership competencies.
- Build and support collaborations with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), national labs, University of California (UC) campuses, or other external partners, including connecting Berkeley Lab ERGs with other ERGs across the national lab complex and UC system.
- Facilitate IDEA-related learning workshops and focus groups for ERGs, Areas/Divisions, and the Laboratory, including partnering with Human Resources and Learning & Culture Office and other internal offices.
- Contribute to and facilitate Lab-wide communities of practice related to IDEA and leadership topics and coordinate completion of IDEA-related reports or deliverables.
What is Required:
- Bachelor degree in relevant field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in Human Resources, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion or related programs; or an equivalent combination of skills and experience.
- Strong program and project management and organizational skills to effectively develop, deliver, track, and/or support multiple projects and initiatives, including influencing change and driving programs and initiatives within a strategic plan.
- Demonstrated experience managing and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to build trust and strong partnerships across various functions and levels, including executives, employee groups, external vendors, consultants.
- Prior experience in a consultative role, serving as a trusted advisor and partner to identify issues and create roadmaps to solutions in a data-driven environment; solid consultation skills regarding workplace DEI concerns.
- Excellent coaching skills and experience in fostering leadership and professional development for individuals and groups in support of workplace belonging and inclusion and promoting a growth mindset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution and navigating complex dynamics.
- Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills that build support of initiatives, promote collaboration among stakeholders, and clearly articulate strategy and business cases.
- Completion of diversity, equity, and inclusion-related training(s) and/or coursework.
- Demonstrated commitment to IDEA and fostering positive and inclusive work environments, including ability to demonstrate cultural responsiveness and understanding of multiple facets of diversity and inclusion.
- Successful track record of working well under pressure, managing and adapting to multiple and changing priorities, and working successfully in a complex and results-oriented environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a related field, including social or behavioral science, industrial/organizational psychology, counseling psychology, or organizational development.
- Experience working in a scientific research organization or academia.
- Diversity, equity & inclusion-related professional certificate (e.g., Certified Diversity Professional) and/or completion of mediation training.

- This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- This position is expected to pay $150,000-$165,000 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Onsite presence required 1 to 3 days per week, depending on in-person meetings, events, and collaborations; off-site requirements include reliable internet.
