R&D Design Engineer

ABB Electrification Installation Products is currently seeking a R&D Engineer for our Premier Products R&D team, which has the principal goal of supporting some of ABB Electrification Installation Products core product brands such as Steel City®, Ocal® and Red-Dot®. In this role you will provide the necessary support to accelerate new product design and development to the next generation of best-in-class status. You will perform all necessary tasks required to support your assigned product lines including design, testing, validation oversight, and all product maintenance activities.

Your responsibilities

• Provide R&D/Engineering support for assigned product lines, with the intent to become R&D Lead and Subject Matter Expert.
• Design high and low volume products utilizing manufacturing methods including Casting, Metal Stamping, Machining, and Additive Manufacturing.
• Manage several product development activities including design, testing, certification, manufacturing vendor communications, etc.
• Perform dimensional tolerance analysis to ensure design functionality.
• Use analytical/problem solving skills to resolve design issues and product line challenges related to customer facing information.
• Prepare engineering documentation including drawings, BOM, material specifications, instruction sheets, quality control plans, etc.
• Provide project updates and deliver gate meeting presentations as needed, both formally and informally through proactive communications.
• Initiate patents and provide engineering support for intellectual property activities. Recognize opportunities and potential risks related to intellectual property.

Your background

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or similar) required.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of engineering experience in manufacturing for large scale production, product testing, finite element analysis, stress analysis and design for manufacturing.
• Solid experience in prototype creation (from small-scale proof of concepts to production representative samples required for performance testing).
• Direct work experience with Microsoft Office applications and 3D modeling software; Creo is highly preferred.
• Proficiency in material selection for both new and existing product designs.
• Experience collaborating with cross functional teams such as manufacturing and product management.
