Job description
Summary
Works in tandem with ICU nurse(s) assigned to patients throughout the course of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Therapy. Manages ECMO circuit functionality to optimize the clinical needs of the patient receiving therapy; ensures safety of the circuit through surveillance, assessment, and established interventions; prevents and manages circuit emergencies. Utilizes skills taught through in-house training, certification, and skills validation to deliver specialized care safely and effectively to patients, under the leadership of the ECMO Manager, ECMO Coordinator, and Lead Perfusionist. Responsible for the ECMO circuit, cannula, and cannula insertion site. Responsible for maintaining skills, attending required quarterly validation sessions, and attending required meetings and case reviews.
Education
Associate’s degree from a Nursing or Respiratory Therapy program required. Bachelor’s Degree from a Nursing or Respiratory Therapy program preferred.
Licensure/Certification
Must have either an Registered Nurse (RN) granted by an applicable State Board of Nursing; or a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) granted by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Experience
2 years of strong surgical, medical, or cardiovascular critical care experience is required. 1+ years of experience as an ECMO specialist preferred.
Other Qualifications
Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, assist with 100 pounds. Lifting requirements may be heavier for specified departments.
