Job description
Under the Immunotransplant Laboratory Supervisor the technologist will be responsibility for testing performance in the Immunotransplant section of the laboratory. All duties will be performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards, and will comply with all criteria mandated by the appropriate accrediting, regulatory and licensing agencies. Performs careful and accurate scientific work in histocompatibility and molecular pathology on specimens from patients of all ages, using both manual and automated methods. Demonstrates independent judgment and technical interpretation of test results and potential exceptions in the testing process. Serves as a technical resource for physicians, house and laboratory staff. Performs routine corrective maintenance and troubleshooting for the highly sophisticated instrumentation utilized within the laboratory.
Education:
Baccalaureate degree in relevant areas such as clinical laboratory science (Medical Lab Scientist) required.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
- Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) registration or equivalent certification preferred, but not required.
- Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT)(American Board for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics) preferred, but not required.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- HLA Antigen assignment using serological and molecular techniques.
- HLA Antibody screening using serological and solid phase techniques.
- HLA serological crossmatching.
- Capable of working and making decisions independently.
- Basic understanding of transplant immunology. Basic computer skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and clinical services.
- Ability to perform testing in compliance with all histocompatibility certification agency requirements/standards.
- Effective trouble shooting skills for both ongoing instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting functions to assure effective equipment performance.
- Minimum to moderate physical effort.
- Troubleshoot instrumentation and procedures in an effort to maintain an efficient work flow.
- Maintain and order, as needed, inventory and supplies required to efficiently operate the section.
- Participate in the evaluation and selection of equipment, methods, and procedures needed for the section.
- Maintain records and documentation in compliance with the required rules and regulations of all licensing and accrediting agencies and organizations.
- Maintain accurate records including patient files, UNOS data and Gift of Hope (OPO) data.
- Attains all goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization’s overall mission.
- Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, section/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
- Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team inter- and intra-sectionally to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Will maintain and update technical knowledge and skills and participate in the ongoing sharing of this knowledge.
- Performs work of equal skill and responsibility as directed.
- May also perform work of higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be requested to perform work of lesser responsibility, when work load of section so requires.
- Perform required Quality Assurance and proficiency testing to maintain ASHI accreditation.
- Share “on call” duties with qualified technologist equally.

- Performs other related work as required or requested.
