Job description

The Chair of the Department of Surgery is a paramount leadership role that requires a blend of clinical expertise, visionary thinking, and strategic acument.  The Chair will provide leadership, ensuring a high level of cooperation, communication among the staff, and will be personally responsible for promoting and maintaining excellence and integrity in quality and patient care.   This individual will monitor volume, clinical quality, operations improvements, and financial performance.   It is anticipated that they will be an active clinician and educator and will be a visible leader and mentor.

The successful candiate will have an established reputation for surgical and clinical excellence and innovation, along with a proven record of having demonstrated clinical leadership, organizational, and management skills needed to lead in the context of a changing healthcare environment.  The department is seeking a surgically active leader with a strong vision for growth, who prioritizes clinical quality and scholarship, and who appeciates the importance of collegial decision making in an interdisciplinary envvironment. They must have a demonstrated passion for embracing change and organizing others to achieve ambitious goals. 

Above all, the Chair will be the architect of the department in promoting and supporting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

The candidate should possess a medical degree (MD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, MD/PhD) be board certified in Surgery and/or their relevant surgical subspecialty, eligible for licensure in the state of Rhode Island, and have academic credentials suitable for appointment to the rank of full professor. Additionally, they should demonstrate a documented history of advancing leadership roles in an intricate, matrixed academic medical center, coupled with the skill to navigate the intricacies of a distributed academic structure with political savvy.
