Pay Grade/Pay Range:  $15.00 - $19.52 (Hourly N1)

Department/Organization: 507203 - Transit

Normal Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday 4:00am to 9:00pm

Job Summary:  The Driver operates automobiles, vans, or other vehicles. Loads and unloads materials, goods, equipment, and passengers between various destinations as assigned. May be responsible for vehicle maintenance and presentation.

Additional Department Summary:  This position requires significant interaction with the public and the ability to work with a diverse University population. A Crimson Ride - Transit Vehicle Operator is likely to deal with many customer service issues during their assigned shift. Because the Crimson Ride - Transit Operation works flexible hours to support the campus needs, they may often deal with safety/security issues. Fills in for Transportation Dispatcher as needed.

Required Minimum Qualifications:  Must be able to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge:  Must demonstrate a demeanor to engage diverse clientele with an upbeat and positive attitude at all times. Good listening, comprehension and communication skills. Ability to work autonomously. Must utilize good judgment and maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict. Ability to become familiar with the University of Alabama campus buildings and locations. Must be able to work under pressure and with frequent interruptions. Must be able to learn and use various department specific phone, computer and other online systems. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work shifts with varying schedules to include holidays and be on stand-by during emergency threatening situations, such as severe weather, natural disasters, etc.

Ability to operate University owned motor vehicles while complying with safety codes, state and federal traffic rules, regulations, safe operating practices. Ability to perform safety inspections, recognize and report mechanical problems, perform preventive maintenance check (oil, and all fluid levels, tire pressure). Ability to adjust driving method to traffic, road, inclement and severe weather conditions, and load. Ability to become familiar with the University of Alabama campus buildings and locations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions from supervisor. Ability to interpret and follow operating manuals and maintenance manuals. Ability to learn and use automated routing software program, ride reservation program and associated equipment. Ability to meet time schedules and deadlines and complete tasks without jeopardizing safety. Ability to use provided communications equipment. Ability to respond to frequent and or abrupt changes in instructions. Ability to assist in the training and development of new staff. Ability to properly safeguard all University property.

Preferred Qualifications:  Some experience in a transit/transportation related position.
