Job Description

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking an Associate Director for the Institute for Human Development (IHD), a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) funded by the Administration on Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities under the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act. This is a state funded position.

The IHD Associate Director will bring compatible core values, a record of progressive managerial experience, and visionary strategic leadership skills to the position. The person filling this position will be a positive self-starter who is motivated to pursue and develop opportunities for IHD. The Associate Director, in collaboration with the Executive Director, holds responsibilities that encompass comprehensive day-to-day management of IHD and its staff. The Associate Director acts as the primary contact with Human Resources in the creation, recruitment, hiring, and management of personnel. The person in this position will oversee facility maintenance and renovations; manage budget monitoring and contribute to fiscal management. They will provide leadership in the areas of program development (new grants and contracts), program management, and program evaluation. Additionally, the Associate Director will serve on state and university advisory committees, and act on behalf of the Executive Director at the local, state, and national levels.

The person hired into the position will be expected to further expand IHD's external funding portfolio through grants and contracts, while supporting the maintenance of current state and national partnerships.

IHD is housed in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences located on the campus of NAU in Flagstaff, Arizona. IHD is an interdisciplinary unit and the oldest Institute at NAU. IHD is one of two UCEDDs in Arizona. IHD typically has between 40 to 60 full-time staff and operates out of 18,000 square feet of offices, instructional, and research space. IHD staff develop and lead programs in four core areas: research and evaluation; service; interdisciplinary education and training; and dissemination as related to improving life outcomes of individuals with disabilities. These core areas are aligned with the vision and mission of IHD:

• Mission: Promote full inclusion by advancing attitudes that value persons with disabilities and enhancing access to all aspects of the human experience.

Personnel Support & Oversight - 35%

• Directs and supervises staff, as assigned by the Executive Director, that includes providing staff expectations, on-going mentoring, and annual performance appraisals.
• Serves as chief liaison with Human Resources in the establishment, recruitment, hiring, and management of personnel.
• Promotes a productive, inclusive work environment, helps with potential performance and employee relations issues.
• Provides input in employment decisions and has significant influence over performance decisions.
• Responsible for processing requests for reclassifications, special assignments, and salary increases.
• Responsible for assisting in the development of position descriptions, managing search committees, participating in the negotiation of salaries, ensuring adherence to hiring protocols and documentation of the recruitment process.
• Assists with onboarding new staff.

Communication & Coordination - 25%

• Serves as the liaison between IHD and statewide organizations and committees.
• Represents IHD with national and state agencies as well as within NAU.
• Serves as the IHD representative on university committees as determined by the Executive Director.
• Serves as a member of an AUCD Council.
• Coordinates IHD's Consumer Advisory Committee for strategic input for IHD.
• Facilitates development and submission of manuscripts and other publications.
• Provides oversight and input for organization and planning of annual IHD Evidence for Success Disability Conference, staff meetings, and other major events.

Administrative Management - 20%

• Facilitates Institute-wide equipment purchases and equipment management.
• Assists with building manager responsibilities.
• Coordinates and manages the allocation of space and space improvements.
• Assists the Executive Director in the development and implementation of Institute policy.
• Prepares and/or coordinates programmatic, financial, and administrative reports; analyzing and interpreting IHD generated statistics, financial data, and management plan data.
• Facilitates data coordination for IHD and overseeing the National Information and Reporting System (NIRS) data entry and programmatic report generation and submission.

Grant & Financial Support - 15%

• Identifies grant/funding opportunities consistent with IHD mission and strategic plan.
• Responds to requests for proposals, funding opportunity announcements, potential collaborations, etc.
• Obtains external funding for IHD through grants and contracts.
• Provides support to IHD's leadership team in their submission of grants/contracts.
• Seeks corporate and foundation sponsorships.
• Develops and strengthens certificate and degree programs aligned with the mission and vision of IHD.

Other - 5%

• Travels as necessary
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• 2-4 years of management experience.
• 3-5 of relevant experience.
• A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in relevant field.
• Proficiency in utilizing PeopleSoft for personnel management and financial operations.
• Skilled in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office programs.
• Experienced in navigating Cayuse and grant management platforms like eRA Commons and Research.gov.
• Familiarity with Northern Arizona University's internal processes and the collaboration dynamics among researchers, academic departments, the Office of Sponsored Research, and the Contracts and Purchasing Office.
• Advanced proficiency across various platforms for file sharing, data management, and web-based communication tools.
• Trained in proposal development, project management, and compliance protocols.
• Knowledgeable about the National Information Reporting System (NIRS), a web-based data reporting and retrieval system for the AUCD Network.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

• Knowledge of and experience working with state, federal, private, and non-profit organizations.
• Knowledge of and experience with managing federal and state grants and contracts.
• Knowledge of and experience working with grants and contracts management in institutions of higher education (IHE).
• Knowledge of and experience working in an IHE Interdisciplinary unit.
• Knowledge of and experience developing and initiating programs and services in an IHE.
• Knowledge of the disability landscape in Arizona and the United States.
• Knowledge of grant and manuscript development.
• Experience developing and implementing budgets for grants and contracts.

Salary

Anticipated salary range is $83,312 - $104,140. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
