POSITION DETAILS
The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law seeks an exceptional individual to serve as its Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Programs (???Clinic Dean???) to lead CUNY Law???s well-developed in-house clinic and externship programs. The Clinic Dean will lead an outstanding group of faculty members in CUNY Law???s nationally ranked clinical program. CUNY Law seeks a Clinic Dean who shares a commitment to social justice, thinks deeply about practice models and strategies that work to promote justice, and brings pedagogical insights to the design of programs to educate the next generation of public interest lawyers.
Since its founding in 1983, the CUNY School of Law's mission has been to train a diverse group of students to become excellent public interest lawyers. In 2007, the Carnegie Report praised CUNY Law???s educational program for the unique way in which it prepares students for practice through extensive curriculum integration of law, lawyering, and ethical decision-making. The Clinic Dean plays a pivotal role in shaping the curriculum and leading the clinical program.
The Clinic Dean administers one or more key College programs. They develop, implement, and assess programs and services to produce high-quality results and meet strategic goals. They also coordinate activities among different units, and with areas outside the College, and may oversee staff, budget, operations, and facilities.
The Clinic Dean leads faculty members who teach in clinical programs, a group of staff members dedicated to supporting the work of the clinics, visiting faculty and fellows, staff attorneys, and the day and evening students enrolled in capstone clinical programs. The program encompasses live-client clinics and a hybrid clinic that has both live-client and placement-based work in which students and faculty practice under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) organization called Main Street Legal Services, Inc. (MSLS). MSLS provides legal assistance locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally every year. The clinical program also includes practice clinic programs in which students are placed in public interest law offices and participate in a substantial curricular module.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the Clinic Dean is expected to maintain and enhance academic excellence in the program, fully implement justice initiatives, lead curricular and program development at the Law School, represent the Law School in local and national legal, educational, and social justice communities, teach classes as needed, provide leadership in fundraising initiatives, and assist in seeking external support for programs.
The Clinic Dean also serves as the Executive Director of Main Street Legal Services, Inc. (MSLS).
This position may include weekend and evening hours.
