Job description
Partnering with the CEO and the Lead Trust Veterinarian, the Head of Veterinary Services plays a key role in the activities of the Trust. This position is part of the AVMA Trust senior leadership team and supports the Trust’s mission and strategic objectives from a veterinary perspective. This is a hybrid position with approximately 15-20% travel.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Head of Veterinary Services is a management/leadership position that supervises the Trust Veterinarian and Student Services teams for the AVMA Trust (AVMA LIFE Trust, AVMA PLIT)

Position responsibilities and activities
- Veterinary team management and oversight
- Assist in formulating/executing strategic and operational objectives to accomplish the Trust’s mission, vision, and strategic goals, as part of the AVMA Trust Senior Leadership team
- Provide regular reports of Trust Veterinarian and Student Services teams’ activity
- Contribute to and review Trust newsletters and communications
- Attend veterinary conferences/meetings and tradeshows on behalf of the Trust to build and maintain industry relationships
- Provide educational presentations related to professional liability and professional and personal risk management
- Professional liability claims support and review
- Develop supervised teams’ personal and professional growth opportunities through team engagement and yearly goals
- On an annual basis, with the assistance of the Trust CEO, draft a personal and professional development plan/goals to continuously improve leadership and team skills which also support the goals of the Trust
Education and Skills
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Minimum of 10 years recent practice experience with small/companion animals
- Medical Director, practice ownership, or practice management experience preferred
- Experience or advanced training in emergency/critical care, internal medicine, or surgery a plus
- Strong Leadership and management experience
- Public speaking, presentation, and networking skills
- Strong time management
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and projects
