About GIACE and ComEx Global Insights & Analytics and Commercial Excellence (GIACE) accelerates business impact throughInsights and capability transformation. From early-stage R&D through late-stage commercial, we: (1) guide disease and R&D capability strategy to increase the value of our pipeline; (2) influence go-to- market and commercialization strategy to ensure readiness for launch; (3) drive maximum value of our new product launches for HCPs, patients and AZ; and (4) amplify brand growth and transform customer engagement. As part of GIACE, Commercial Excellence (ComEx) exists to drive #3 and #4 above by
defining commercial excellence standards, performing opportunity and impact diagnostics, partnering to build tailored solutions, and progressing commercial capabilities. The Director of Clinical Learning plays a meaningful role in shaping and operationalizing the ComEx mission.
The Clinical Learning Director serves on the leadership team of the US Commercial Excellence (ComEx)
organization. The Clinical Learning Director is responsible for strategic development and implementation
of all US clinical sales learning and development experiences for Field Sales Representatives and Sales
Leaders. This role directly manages Clinical Learning Managers and Clinical Learning Specialists, and
reports to the Senior Director of US Sales, Transformation & Market Access Capabilities.
The Clinical Learning Director leads the function responsible for building/enhancing Clinical acumen of
the Commercial sales organization in the US. The Director must balance (1) immediate demands with (2)
future-facing activity that will ensure the US business has the right capabilities to meet the changing
demands of the AZ strategy. A key 2023 focus will be driving strategic capability-building to help
AstraZeneca build its presence as a leader in Specialty Care.
The key focus for the role is to build a top-performing, sought-after ComEx Clinical Learning Team that is
well-respected within the US business. This role partners across sales, marketing, medical, market
access, and other functions to develop a differentiated strategy to deliver the right capabilities at the
right time to the business. In addition, the leader in this role is accountable for delivering and assessing
clinical learning plans for sales professionals around AZ products, their competitors, and the associated
disease states.
Roles and Responsibilities The Director of Clinical Learning establishes the vision for the Clinical Learning Team aligned with
business/brand strategy, inspiring the US organization to build commercial capabilities that can deliver
against the AZ USLT vision/strategy. Responsibilities and requirements, include, but are not limited to:
• In partnership with ComEx LT, develop and lead a clinical learning strategy for transforming field
force capabilities to meet the dynamic needs of the Specialty Care environment
• Inspire ownership, accountability, initiative, and engagement within the entire team by regularly
communicating AZ's vision, business objectives, performance outcomes, and future action steps
• Develop people and the organization through mentoring, coaching, and continuous feedforward
• Create a climate of trust so team members can act decisively by clarifying roles/responsibilities
and establishing boundaries of decision making
• Focus on delivering on a few high-impact opportunities by implementing therapeutic area-
specific approaches based upon their needs and preferences
• Accurately acknowledge both broad environmental context of situations and needs/motivations
of others (ie, insight into how to get things done, who they need to influence, and why)
• Identify issues and opportunities before others, and use robust analytical rigor to frame
situations and incorporate new perspectives and ideas
• Anticipate and/or remove obstacles for others so teams/workgroups can deliver results and
succeed
• Establish business objectives, assess performance, and address skill development for direct
reports to ensure appropriate portfolio management, including opportunities for career
development
• Hold final accountability for all clinical content and learning assets, timelines, and operational
budget
• Partner in development of metrics to monitor Learning curriculum effectiveness, adjusting plans
as appropriate to deliver improved performance
Requirements • Bachelor's degree in science, health care, or related discipline
• Minimum of 10 years' experience in pharmaceutical sales or health care, including 3-5 years of
leading teams
• Formal experience in Learning, curriculum design, and delivery both in live and virtual settings
• Other operational, global, or marketing experience preferred
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, and project and vendor management skills
• Expertise in stakeholder engagement and relationship management in a complex matrix
environment
• Travel may be required occasionally for regional and national meetings and conferences
