Job description

Job Duties:

The Head of Circulation is responsible for overseeing the circulation of the Academic Library Services' ( ALS ) general collections and equipment. The position provides leadership and vision for the department to design, deliver and maintain accessible, forward-looking, and user-centered services that advance the diverse teaching, learning and research needs of the East Carolina University community. It provides basic customer service to facilitate the general use of the library. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Public Services, the position manages a department of six employees and serves as a member of the ALS Director's Council.

The successful candidate will:

• Provide leadership and vision for the University Library's circulation, stack maintenance, and reserves services across two locations.
• Be responsible for the management, leadership, and development of a departmental work team.
• Maintain a high level of awareness of library service and user trends, monitor users' needs and anticipate requirements for the implementation of new services.
• Develop and implement procedures that improve library services to enhance user satisfaction.
• Create and support a welcoming workplace culture and user experience by gaining a full understanding of the work functions supervised, listening to and incorporating staff feedback on relevant projects and initiatives, supporting continuous professional development, and engaging in transparent decision-making processes.
• Develop departmental metrics for success and analyze trends to continually evaluate services and their impact. Use data and assessment techniques to advocate for and support evidence-informed decisions around staffing, resources, services, spaces, programs, and user experience.
• Delegate responsibilities effectively, empower staff to make independent decisions at appropriate operational levels, and establish balanced and equitable workloads, providing guidance, direction, monitoring, performance evaluation, and coaching as needed.
• Promote effective communications between the Circulation department and other library and university departments.
• Perform frontline duties at the service desk.
• Resolve user issues in accordance with procedures using best practices for customer service.
• Assist and serve as backup for the ILS / LMS as it relates to Circulation functions.
• Chair or serve as a member of appropriate library, university, and professional committees.
• Initial appointment or advancement to Library Associate Professor or Library Professor requires regular contributions to scholarship/creative activity.

This is a 12 month, fixed-term permanent position. Contingent upon availability of funds.
