The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences is seeking an salaried Academic Wage: Faculty Research Assistant. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term position.

The Faculty Research Assistant will lead the census of Caspian Terns in the Pacific Flyway during the 2024 nesting period. This position will perform a variety of duties, including communication with collaborators, data collection via aerial survey photography, colony counts from photos, data analysis of count data, and produce a summary report for publication. The incumbent will oversee one project involving wildlife research and monitoring. This position will require travel to Alaska, Washington, and California. They will be responsible for proper dissemination of results specifically producing a draft report for the funding agency. The position will be expected to coordinate with other faculty research assistants, undergraduate research assistants, and interns for colony counts.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

The defined qualifications will need to be identified in the Minimum/Required Qualifications field.

Requirements :

Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, ecology, biology, wildlife sciences or related field.


Demonstrated ability to conduct field research independently, safely, and proficiently.


Technical photography experience.


Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.


Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds.


This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Type:

This position involves extensive travel for aerial survey work. Travel may include, but is not limited to, AK, CA, WA, OR, and ID. The incumbent must be capable of working in a small plane with extended periods of sitting. The position requires non-standard hours and working on weekends is expected during travel. When not traveling the incumbent will be office based. Remote work will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The position incumbent must have the ability to successfully visually focus and work on a moving observation platform (e.g. plane, helicopter, survey vessel).

Additional Salary Information: $49,992 - $51,540
