Job Title: Elementary Assistant Principal

Position Status: Exempt

Contract Days: 240 Days

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, other duties as assigned.

Primary Purpose Summary:

Assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional programs and campus level operations. Coordinate assigned student activities and services.

Essential Requirements and Responsibilities:

Instructional Management:

• Participates in the development and evaluation of educational programs.
• Encourages and supports development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
• Promotes the use of technology in teaching/learning process.

School Climate:

• Promotes a positive, caring climate for learning.
• Deals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Communicates effectively with students and staff.
• Attends extra-curricular activities as directed by the Principal (student centered activities, school concerts and programs) to support students and staff in all school functions and ensuing continued rapport with students, staff and parents.

Personnel Management:

• Observe employee performance, record observations and conduct evaluation conferences.
• Serves as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
• Assists principal in interviewing, selecting and orienting new staff.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management:

• Supervises operations in Principal’s absence.
• Helps plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules.
• Supervises reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.
• Works with Principal, Department Chairs, Team Leads and Faculty to compile and monitor annual budget requests for Early Childhood and Elementary departments based on documented programs needs.
• Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; checks inventory; maintains records; and verifies receipts for materials.
• Assists with safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
• Coordinates transportation for field trips and other support services.
• Complies with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules and Board policy.

Student Management:

• Ensures that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
• Helps to develop and support a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
• Ensures that schools rules are uniformly observed, and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
• Conducts conferences on student and school issues with parents, students and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development:

• Participates in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

School/Community Relations:

• Articulates the school’s mission to community and solicits its support in realizing mission.
• Demonstrates awareness of school-community needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.
• Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
• Maintains confidentiality of information.
• Reports to work on time every day.

Qualification Requirements:

• Thorough understanding of school operations
• Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
• Working knowledge of Special Education programs, policies, laws, rules and regulations
• Working knowledge to manage budget and personnel
• Working ability to evaluate instructional programs and teacher’s effectiveness

Education and Experience:

• Master’s degree, required. Master’s in Deaf Education, Special Education or Bilingual, preferred
• Three (3) years of experience as a classroom teacher, required. Experience in Deaf Education, Special Education or Bilingual, preferred
• Three (3) years of experience in instructional leadership role, preferred

Certifications:

• Valid Texas Teaching Certificate by the State Board of Education, required. Deaf Education, Special Education or Bilingual Certificate, preferred
• Valid Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal, or Mid-Management Certification by the State Board for Education, required
• Valid Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) Certification by the Texas Education Agency, preferred
• Valid Instructional Leadership Development (ILD) or Advancing Educational Leadership (AEL) Training Certification by the Texas Education Agency, preferred
• High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

Language Skills:

• Ability to effectively present school related information to parents and the general public.
• Bilingual (Spanish, English), preferred

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

Valid Texas Driver’s License with a driving record that meets the requirements of the school.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; hear and have good vision. The employee must regularly lift and/or move 0-20 lbs.
