The VEA is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Paralegal in the Office of Legal Advocacy. VEA is a statewide community of nearly 40,000 teachers and school support professionals working for the betterment of public education in the Commonwealth. General Nature of the Position:
The Paralegal will complement and support VEA’s attorney(s) in administering NEA’s Dushane Programs which advances and protects members’ employment rights. The work includes performing independent and semi-independent work on assigned projects, preparation, and review of legal documents, interviewing witnesses, research, investigations, corporate matters, fact-checking, trial preparation, billing and accounting functions, and multiple clerical duties. VEA’s Paralegal will also serve as Secretary to the Professional Rights & Responsibilities Commission. Attending occasional evening and weekend committees and events within and outside the Richmond area is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate degree in paralegal studies or paralegal certificate.
• Three years (3) of demonstrated work experience as a paralegal.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and ability to learn other software.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with attorneys, members, and professionals on assigned cases or projects.
• Draft legal documents such as correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, motions, affidavits, and discovery materials.
• Conduct legal research and analysis on statutes, regulations, judicial decisions, and proposed legislation.
• Interview clients and witnesses and summarize their statements.
• Manage case files, including organizing, storing, retrieving, and maintaining evidence, exhibits, depositions, and pleadings.
• Assist with trial preparation and attend hearings when necessary.
• Maintain records and reports on billable hours for staff and external attorneys.
• Oversee legal department invoicing, billing, auditing, and accounting processes.
• Manage corporate records and support the General Counsel as Registered Agent for VEA and local affiliates.
• Serve as Secretary for VEA's Professional Rights & Responsibilities Commission, involving meeting preparation, minute-taking, and regular communications with Commissioners.
• Set up, maintain, and close case files, and manage the Attorney Referral Program list.
• Up to 10% in-state travel with occasional overnight.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Salary and Fringe Benefits: This is a Category 3 position covered by the Virginia Associate Staff (VASO) contract. The hiring range is $43,518 – $61,939. Starting salary is negotiable within this range, depending upon experience. The position includes a rich fringe benefits package, including 95% of employer-paid medical insurance, no-cost dental and vision and 100% employer-funded HRA account.
