The LPN Student Nurse Apprentice – Basic is an adjunct to the patient care team who works under the licensed nurse preceptor who remains physically present and readily accessible to designate, prescribe a course of action or give procedural guidance, direction, and periodic evaluation. Direct supervision by the licensed nurse preceptor is required for all invasive procedures. Permitted procedures must not exceed those defined as permitted by the Alabama Board of Nursing as “basic” competencies for the LPN Student Nurse Apprentice. Skills must first be verified by the program of nursing before the skill can be verified by the licensed nurse preceptor in the clinical setting. The licensed nurse preceptor may suspend or withdraw delegation to the LPN Student Nurse Apprentice at any time. The LPN Student Nurse Apprentice is responsible for documentation of all skills performed, but the licensed nurse preceptor is responsible to verify and sign documentation as required. The LPN Nurse Apprentice may not take verbal or phone orders without the presence of the licensed nurse preceptor.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. Currently enrolled in an Alabama Board of Nursing approved nursing education program, required.
2. Current Alabama Board of Nursing Student Nurse Apprentice permit, required upon hire. Note: The permit valid for the duration of the student’s enrollment in an Alabama approved nurse apprentice program or until graduation from the nursing program. It is automatically invalid if the student withdraws from the apprentice program, nursing school or does not make satisfactory progress in the nursing program.
3. Sponsor (Nursing Program) verifies the apprentice meets minimum apprentice eligibility requirements, required.
4. Current Basic Life Support Certification
