Description: The Technical Manager is responsible for management of engineering standards and project execution at the Chicago Plant through the management of the engineering and technical team.
- Equipment Standards for Design and Installation.
- Project Management Process
- Plant process testing, e.g., mist and moisture.
- Product quality analysis.
To fulfill these responsibilities, the Technical Manager is empowered to manage work priority, engage the proper resources to develop and implement equipment, process standards, identify training opportunities, needs in Maintenance and Production, and recommend asset selection criteria and installation standards to Project Engineering. The Technical Manager will monitor department metrics relevant to effective asset management to continually improve performance and will support a reliable, cost-effective culture with Operations and Maintenance.
Responsibilities (May include but are not limited to):
- Responsible for the engineering and technical team and coordination of the team with the plant, the corporation, and customers.
- Responsible for developing and managing expense and capital project management process.
- Responsible for developing and managing equipment design and installation standards.
- Responsible for developing and implementing process testing.
- Provide engineering support for Maintenance and Operations.
- Project management of for Expense and Capital Projects.
- Identify and facilitate training opportunities for plant personnel.
- Develop Key Performance Indicators for Technical department and for the Laboratory. Track, analyze, and develop action plans to continuously improve performance.
- Provide support and vacation coverage for co-workers, as needed, specifically the Plant Manager.
- Facilitate improvements of existing operations. Improvements will have input from multiple disciplines: operators, loaders, maintenance and management as needed.
- Understand how plant operates (hands on method) and understand the different capabilities of the plant.
- Assist in new permits and permit modifications.
- Stay up to date on new equipment designs, new products and processes and help implement to continue to improve plant efficiencies.
- Continuously look for opportunities to improve plant operations for safety, cost reduction, and energy efficiencies.
- Participate in HAZOP and PHA analysis and reviews.
- Uphold the fundamentals of the Nicholson Nine and Responsible Care Guiding Principles. Environmental Health, Safety and Security.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Provide 24/7 support for critical situations.
- Participate in Management of Change process as needed.
- Participate in Responsible Care and Department of Homeland security initiatives.
- Assist sites in SOP development, review, and implementation.
- Participate in other activities and assignments as necessary.

Required Education / Competencies / Equivalent Experience (Prior to hire / transfer):
- Mechanical or chemical engineer with knowledge of chemical industry RAGAGEPs as outlined in CCPS Guidelines for Mechanical Integrity Systems.
- At least 10 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing plant.
- Excellent safety standards.
- Able to work effectively with competing priorities.
- Excellent project management skills to ensure optimal life cycle costs, schedule, and budget.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with multiple levels in the organization and external suppliers.

Preferred Experience
- Designing and Implementing a Mechanical Integrity Program from scratch.
- Experience working in a corrosive environment.
- Experience working in a PSM and RMP facility.
- Experience developing training program for Maintenance Technicians and Operators as it relates to equipment reliability.
- Experience implementing Total Productive Maintenance.
