Purpose of the position

Kalmar USA, Inc. (Ottawa, KS) is seeking a Product Manager, Software. This individual will be responsible with providing expert technical and product assistance with regard to defining, specifying, developing, pricing, promoting, customizing and supporting crane and carrier automation software solutions being offered to customers as part of proposals to automate customer container handling ports or terminals with the Kalmar SmartPort process automation product line; supporting the delivery of mega container port or terminal automation projects from initial customer pitch through completed delivery sign-off; and ensuring customer satisfaction and engagement throughout the automation project solution development, sale, delivery, customization, commissioning and sign-off stages.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Specific duties will include: research, review and analyze customer technical, function, operation, project and budgetary needs, desires, specs and limitations for automated container handling solutions in order to convert these parameters into actionable container handling crane and carrier automation software solutions designs, specs, and modifications that will meet identified customer parameters in the most efficient, economical, practical and technically sound means possible. Develop product definitions for proposed crane and carrier automation software solutions, including key technical requirements of the product; features and functional requirements of the product; parameterization of product capabilities; cost targets for different product modules and value proposition of product offerings or features to ensure competitiveness of product. Create and develop produce baseline configuration(s) for crane and carrier automation software solutions proposed to address customer automation needs and then help guide automation projects with configuration work for the automation software component(s) of projects. Oversee and direct product roadmap development and management for crane and carrier automation software solutions, both for the customization of existing products as well as the development of new product offerings to meet specific customer needs.

Help conduct, oversee and analyze technical, operation, functional and integration modeling and testing of automation software design customizations, enhancements and proposals to determine compliance with customer parameters; provide suggestions as needed to research and develop staff for changes to software for improving its ability to meet various customer parameters. Assist with development of technical/engineering aspects of product and sales documentation, instructions, literature, user guides and customer facing material. Assist with the formulation, development and delivery of sales project plans and cases to customers. Maintain knowledge of cutting-edge technologies and designs in crane and carrier automation and process automation in order to provide product guidance and recommendations for business development and market capture/maintenance. Help lead the product life cycle management process for crane and carrier automation software, including analyses of current offerings, definition and tracking of performance metrics, planning of appropriate measures (example enhancements, cost reductions, phase outs, etc.), and making decisions on offering obsolescence and end of life to ensure current and future market requirements are met and procue line profitability is maximized. Support and cooperate with research and development depts.

To make implementation of the new technologies into product offerings faster. Help oversee planning to market and promote product offerings to the public. Help develop product pricing and product licensing models and options for crane and carrier automation software solutions. Compare Kalmar SmartPort automation products to competitiros’ products in order to assess competition in the market and develop recommendations for future product development, improvement, options and offerings. This position requires extensive (25%) domestic and international travel for customer site visits, attendance of industry trade shows and related. Work from home flexibility but must reside within commuting distance of Kalmar USA’s Paramount CA office in order to attend regular in-person meetings with Kalmar staff and customers. Monday through Friday; 40 hours per week; 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; $169,770 to $175,000 year.

What you’ll need to succeed

Master's degree in field of Automation, Mechatronic, Manufacturing or Software Engineering.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing automation software sales support engineering and automation software solution architecture which included automation software solutions needs analysis, definition and development, solution architecture, sales case and project development and presentation, customer technical liaison, technical documentation preparation as well as application of machine automation technologies (including measurement and navigation systems), integration technologies, and 3D modeling and simulation and

Minimum of three (3) years of experience with the research and development of internet technologies for industrial or machine automation systems.Qualified U.S. workers are encouraged to apply for this position.
