The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all areas relating to the CWS Legal Department. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the legal department including but not limited to staff supervision, case review, court representation, service provision and community outreach. As deemed necessary, the incumbent will be required to travel between offices throughout the Southeast Region Offices to provide Technical Assistance to the legal department.
- Responsible for training and supervising legal staff, including, staff attorneys, senior paralegals; paralegals; volunteer attorneys; law students and other volunteers.
- Holds weekly meetings with legal staff to assign new cases as well as the review and discussion of on-going cases. Participate in legal staff meetings and lead the meetings in the absence of the Director of Immigration Legal Services Southeast Region. Provide weekly activity reports to the Director of Immigration Legal Services Southeast Region.
- Approve and coordinate with the Director of Immigration Legal Services Southeast Region staff time off, for those staff that are under your direct supervision, in order to ensure continuous and adequate program coverage.
- Conduct weekly file review to ensure that all case files are maintained appropriately as pertains to professional service delivery.
- Supervise support staff personnel to ensure successful achievement of daily activities as they pertain to supervising duties. Ensure adequate review of immigration forms completed by the legal staff.
- Ensure adequate representation for CWS clients at USCIS, including but not limited to: immigration interviews; Asylum Hearings; Master Calendar Hearings; and submission of briefs to the Board of Immigration Appeals. Ensure adequate review of immigration forms completed by the legal staff.
- Negotiate with USCIS officers and Supervisors at local District Office or Service Centers to rectify problems faced by clients. Draft supplemental statements, rebuttals to Notices of Intent to Deny and Requests for Evidence; prepare and file immigration applications and motions; prepare other ancillary immigration papers, including Freedom of Information Act requests.
- Conduct intake interviews with clients; prepare clients for court appearances and/or USCIS interviews. Conduct legal research to support filed immigration applications.
- Represent CWS/IRP at Community Based Organization and Refugee Immigration Sub-Committee meetings and various Task Force meetings, related to immigration issues.
- Stay abreast of immigration law updates and USCIS procedures and conduct trainings for staff.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as requested.
Education:
Juris Doctor degree and admission to a State Bar.
Experience:
Four years of experience in the practice of Immigration law and be qualified to appear before the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice Hearings. Also, he/she will have five years’ relevant experience including program and staff supervision. Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-program department and supervise a diverse staff.
Other Skills:
Working knowledge of Spanish or Creole language required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle. Milage accrued while executing work responsibilities is reimbursable by CWS.
- Must complete motor vehicle record check.
- Must be willing and able to travel.
- Background check required.
- Level 2 Fingerprints required.
