The City of Valparaiso, located in the heart of Northwest Indiana, just 60 miles southeast of Chicago and 15 miles south of the beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Meter Technician Level 1. The position reports to the C&D Manager and is responsible for monitoring, installing, repairing, and replacing meters; assisting in troubleshooting concerns and problems; and performing other related office support functions.

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the position satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this document are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Qualifications Include:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including CPR and confined space.
• Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and essential function screening.

Position Expectations include:

• Install new meters, repair, and replace existing meters using wrenches and other tools when necessitated by such factors as leaks, complaints, erroneous readings, new construction and exchanging meters.
• Performs data entry and maintains data in various computer software systems such as ERP systems, asset management software and backflow prevention programs.
• Installs water meters and Smart point transmitting unit (MXU) and programming unit.
• Manually digs to reach existing boxes, disconnect fittings, and replace meters.
• Performs other related office support functions such as back-up support responsibilities, customer service calls, completing changes on new and existing customer accounts, and responding to customer complaints and concerns.
• Performs non-payment shut offs as directed.
• Aids other departments as needed and directed.
• Performs customer service representative duties, including handling banking activities, processing mail, creating service orders, directing customer calls to requested or appropriate department employees, mailing out customer correspondence, and assisting customers at the counter.
• Conducts investigations and surveys of commercial/industrial/residential customer water leakage to determine if sewage adjustments are recommended.
• Performs light maintenance functions for administrative offices and grounds, such as snow removal, trash and recycling duties and unloading delivery trucks.
• Attends safety and training programs as scheduled.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation:

The City of Valparaiso provides a competitive salary structure. The salary for the Meter Technician Level 1 is $51,624/year.
