Field Director

About SEIU Local 509
SEIU Local 509 is a fast growing, progressive union representing over 20,000 state workers, human service workers, higher education faculty and graduate student workers, and family child care providers in Massachusetts.
General Description of Position
As a manager and member of our senior staff, you will oversee the work of all the Local's membership divisions, with primary responsibility for managing field operations related to internal organizing.
Examples of Duties:
- Manage division Coordinators of the Local (Public, Private, Family Childcare, Higher Education).
- Coordinate with the President of the Local, the Chief of Staff, and other managers as necessary to ensure operational success across divisions.
- Assist division Coordinators with the development and implementation of field plans for member growth, bargaining and contract campaigns, political action, social justice goals, and other internal organizing projects as needed.
- Ensure that Local-wide goals are adjusted to the specific needs of each division.
- Work with the Local's Political Director to develop and execute annual Local-wide political goals.
- Plan and facilitate (or secure facilitators for) field staff training.
- Research and share professional development opportunities relevant to field staff.
- Research and pursue grants and other funding opportunities to support field work across all divisions of the Local.
- Liaise with the International Union on various initiatives, such as Together We Rise; represent the Local's interests and help set reasonable expectations.
- Represent the Local in external matters, including meetings with other labor, community, and political organizations, employers, and state agencies as needed.
- Provide information to the Local's Joint Executive Board relevant to field services.
- Assess, in partnership with the Director of Finance and HR and the Chief of Staff, staffing needs across all divisions of the Local.
- Oversee the work of the Local's standing member committees, including monitoring membership levels, ensuring there are staff liaisons, and coordinating operational support for committee actions as needed.
- Periodically review internal systems and processes for efficiency and work with other members of the senior staff to revise them as necessary.
- Participate in Local-wide strategic planning.
- Perform related work and union-wide duties as required and assigned.
- Specific duties may change at the direction of the President of the Local.
Supervision:
You will report directly to the President of the Local. As a manager, you will directly supervise the Coordinators of the Public, Private, Family Childcare, and Higher Education sectors, which may include interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, delegating, evaluating, promoting, transferring, investigating, disciplining, and terminating, as needed. Supervision and organizational structure may change at the direction of the Chief of Staff and the President of the Local.
Working Conditions:
This job is based in our Marlborough, MA office, but may work remotely as appropriate. Frequent travel within Massachusetts and occasional out-of-state travel is required. Working long hours, evenings, and weekends is often necessary; the baseline expectation is to work 37.5 hours across 5 days each week.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Attending various outdoor events, sometimes for a full working day, even in potentially uncomfortable (but not unsafe) weather.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- Experience working for a labor union.
- Experience in the senior management of a nonprofit organization.
- Experience with the duties of internal organizing, including representation, bargaining, and member recruitment.
- Experience designing and executing a strategic issues-based campaign.
- Familiarity with the working conditions and issues of most of the Local's various constituencies, including:
- Public employees
- Human services
- Family childcare
- Higher education
- Knowledge of United States and Massachusetts labor laws.
- Basic computer skills and a willingness to learn new technologies.
- Preferred:
- Experience managing a geographically dispersed workforce.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts politics and geography.
- Knowledge of national trends in the labor movement and the Local's constituencies.

Compensation:
Salary is determined by the Local 509 budget; as of 2024: $114,630 / year. Benefits include, at no cost to the employee, health insurance with FSA and HRA, dental insurance, short and long-term disability, a pension, an optional 401k (no employer match), and generous paid time off.
