BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Under the supervision of the Chief Consultant of the assigned committee and the Secretary of the Senate, the Committee Assistant will be assigned to support various Senate Committees as needed. The Committee Assistant will perform tasks ranging from basic office duties to higher-level committee responsibilities depending upon office placement and need. The incumbent may be asked to perform all or a variety of the following: process all amendments to legislation; maintain bill files and other committee records; proofread and distribute committee analyses and other hearing materials; respond to inquiries from legislators, staff, and the public; attend, organize and prepare committee hearings; report committee actions to the Senate Desk; track legislation; accept, collate, and ensure accuracy of support and opposition of legislation; manage and post materials to the committee website; execute key tasks using legislative software programs; and coordinate with all committee staff to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality work products. This position also performs general office duties such as answering multiple phone lines, retrieving and sorting incoming mail, retrieving and triaging phone messages, and greeting visitors in a courteous and professional manner.





DUTIES:
The incumbent must excel both as a member of a professional team and in the individual work necessary to perform all of the responsibilities of the committee assistant. High attention to detail, strong work ethic, ability to complete assigned tasks on deadline, effective communication skills, and capacity to manage responsibilities effectively in the legislative environment are essential. Must be able to balance multiple high-priority tasks and exhibit maturity, good judgment, honesty, and professionalism.



EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiarity with the legislative process is strongly preferred. Previous committee experience preferred, but not required. If applicable, please include verification of your degree with your completed application. A strong work ethic is essential.

LOCATION, SALARY AND FILING DATE:
This position is located in Sacramento, CA.
Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Seniority and significant experience are required to reach the higher end of the salary range.
The Committee Assistant has three levels. The appropriate level will be determined based on the candidate’s education and experience.
