Job description
This is a pipeline position intended for recent job fair on July 8th.
BAE Systems, Norfolk Ship Repair is hiring Handypersons to support the Plate Shop.
Position Summary:
Handypersons help and assist mechanics with their key roles and responsibilities. Handypersons are expected to have an intermediary knowledge of key roles and responsibilities as well as functional knowledge specific to their trade. Handypersons must also have demonstrated the ability to perform all tasks of Handyperson, Helper (1st & 2nd) and show a desire to learn new tasks.
Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge
Performance Related
- Proven ability to perform tasks of Handyperson, and helper
- 12 months without any written warnings for rules violation
- Must have a good performance evaluation
- Able to report to work on time each day and have good attendance record
- Able to work overtime when required
- Able to work with others and in a team
- Demonstrate improved trade skills
Process/Procedure related
- Ability to comprehend processes and procedures
- Able to understand and follow safety rules
- Have a working understanding of Tag Out and Lock Tag out programs
- Know and understand basic math
- Able to read and write
- Accomplish assigned tasks under moderate supervision
- Have a working knowledge of the WAF (Work Authorization Forms) and its process
- Have a basic understand of functional theory – based on assigned trade
Equipment Related
- Work with shop equipment / maintenance of equipment
- Acquire a personal hand tool collection
- Must have general knowledge and can demonstrate use of hand tools
- Able to work around heavy equipment
- Knowledgeable regarding uses of pneumatic, hydraulic and electric power tools
- Independently operate small equipment
- Help with maintenance on equipment
- Operate machinery using good judgment/operator skills
- Have a general understanding of naval vessel compartment number systems and related vessel terminology
Required Education, Experience, & Skills Required Education, Experience, & Skills :
Minimum Education: High Diploma/GED
Minimum Relevant Experience: 6 months to 1.5 yrs.
- Assist Plate Shop personnel in accomplishing assigned tasks
- Grind, scale and conduct other surface preparation activities
- Some cutting and tacking
- Learning about hot work requirements
- Operate the overhead crane and forklift with proper certification
- Use shop equipment
- Perform basic layout(access's, ripout)
- Possess basic blueprint reading skills
- Assist with tank testing
- Possess basic hand torch skills
- Become familiar with the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel
- Fetch tools and material
- Assist with tank testing
- Pick up templates
- Possess basic plasma torch cutting skills
- Possess simple fabrication skills
Set up and perform basic shipfitting tasks
Other Requirements
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
- Must be able to use specified tools required tools as determined by the shop management
- Maintain job site cleanliness
- Ability to work in confined Space Entry
- Able to work at heights (if applicable to trade)
- Be able to work off scaffolding (if applicable to trade)
- Able to work with hands
- Ability to walk, stand, long periods at a time
- Able to wear the required PPE
- Basic material identification skills
- Make measurements to 1/16" using measuring tape or ruler
- Basic blueprint reading (Excludes labor shop)
- Assist with troubleshooting and issue resolution as required
- Must be able to obtain government access badge.

Pay Information This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your wages.
