Summary

This is a twelve-month appointment professional staff position in the Mercer University Archives, Special Collections, and Digital Initiatives department, located in the Jack Tarver Library in Macon. This position contributes to the success of the Tarver Library by providing digital access to primary research materials and other items in the archives, assisting the University Archivist in project management, and working with colleagues from Mercer and the broader community. Archives, Special Collections, and Digital Initiatives preserves and makes available a vast collection of historical materials on the history of Mercer University and Georgia Baptists.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Digital Initiatives (60%)

Assists the University Archivist in oversight of the unique materials housed in Tarver Library, according to accepted archival standards.

Develops, implements, and provides leadership for digital initiatives involving departmental materials and services; collaborates in planning, prioritizing, creating, and managing digital collections and adding metadata.

Implements procedures for archives and digital collection management following professional standards and best practices, including arrangement of and access to materials.

Assists in creating or editing finding aids of archival collections according to accepted standards and best practices.

Implements quality control procedures and workflows for digitizing collections.

Collaborates with the Electronic Resources Library in the maintenance of repositories and systems as well as to publish finding aids in ArchivesSpace and URSA, Mercer’s online repository.

Assists patrons in using archival materials in-person, via telephone, and electronic mail.

Project Management (30%)

Supervises and trains students, interns, and volunteers to assist with digitization as needed.

Participates in departmental and library planning and assessment activities.

Collaboration (10%)

Understands and promotes the unit mission to researchers and the Mercer community. Assists in promoting the public presence of the archives through brochures, web sites, exhibits, and finding aids.

Assists with donor relations and provides input for fund-raising activities to benefit the archives.

Contributes to archives/library scholarship, service, and culture as a member of the library and other professional organizations.

Participates as a visible, engaged colleague in local, regional, and national meetings related to Baptist history and the archives profession.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science or an equivalent graduate degree in a related field.

Relevant coursework and/or experience in arranging and describing archival collections.

Demonstrated understanding of accepted archival standards with regard to metadata, handling of archival materials, and preservation issues.

Relevant coursework and/or experience in creating and maintaining digital collections using Alma/Primo, ArchivesSpace, DSpace, LibAnswers, LibGuides, and other software.

Commitment to excellent customer service, strong organizational, and interpersonal communication skills, including initiative, creativity, problem-solving, and knowledge of professional trends.

Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory experience with student assistants, and interns.

Quality service attitude and a high professional standard.

Competence in the utilization of social media for library services.

Potential for scholarly and professional achievement.
