The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Technical Engineer 1/Architect 1 to help us
Keep Alaska Moving!
What you will be doing: This position will report to the Regional Preconstruction Engineer but will work closely with regional Maintenance & Operations staff, planning staff, project delivery staff, Statewide staff, and the public, to support efficient transportation operations and infrastructure expansion.
This key technical position will: - Develop and implement a regional TSMO plan and support statewide TSMO plan development.
- Provide technical expertise for regional traffic and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design and operations Ensure team technical core competencies are maintained, working with technical resources within the team and subject matter experts elsewhere in the Department to promote cross-training in support of staff development as well as high-quality and efficient project delivery.
- Provide expertise in the areas of lighting design, traffic signal design, ITS component design (signal interconnect, count station and vehicle classifier design, message sign design, new technologies design), connected and autonomous vehicle technologies, systems engineering analysis (SEA), and material certification.
- Lead operations of signal and ITS systems and track operational performance and reliability.
- Be the regional representative responsible for ensuring highway lighting, traffic signal and ITS installations are designed and operated efficiently, economically, and are useful to the driving public while being coordinated with existing infrastructure.
- Lead regional innovation and collaborate with Statewide staff on potential innovations and implementation of emerging ITS technologies.

The working environment you can expect: This position will work from the DOT&PF complex (2301 Peger Road and 2720 Picket Place) which houses all of Northern Region’s design, construction, maintenance and support staff between multiple buildings within walking distance along Peger Road. Situational telework is also an option. The daily work environment is highly collaborative. The office location provides abundant parking, a team-oriented atmosphere, and great break time walking with a coffee shop conveniently across the street.

Minimum Qualifications
Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
