Job Summary
The Pipefitter (Refrigeration) Sub-Foreperson's primary responsibility is to plan, coordinate, estimate, and supervise work of assigned pipefitter/refrigeration mechanics and to perform pipefitting/refrigeration work including installation and maintenance of campus heating/cooling systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Directly supervises, provides leadership, and assigns work to pipefitter/refrigeration mechanics assigned to the refrigeration shop to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules. Plans and organizes the refrigeration maintenance and alteration work performed by refrigeration mechanics and other assigned personnel. Assists with estimates by providing labor and material costs for assigned projects which may include departmental charge-out, maintenance repairs, and preventative maintenance. Works closely with the work management center, project coordinators, engineering, and building maintenance. Monitors schedule and controls craft-related costs. Performs pipefitter/refrigeration work as needed or assigned.
- Monitors work performance of assigned personnel and ensures satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met. Monitors work to ensure compliance with prevailing codes and university facilities standards as well as correct procedures and techniques. Visits job sites to ensure satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met.
- Participates in job/project meetings with other job/project stakeholders (e.g., campus customers, project coordinators, etc.). Participates in multi-craft work order review meetings with shop foreperson and building maintenance supervision.
- Maintains records of work completed, material purchasing, overtime lists, and training records. Verifies and approves mobile timekeeping and/or timecards.
- Responsible for tools, equipment, and materials assigned for use in the refrigeration shop. Deliver tools, materials, and personnel to job site as needed operating a university vehicle.
- Provide leadership for emergency response during off normal working hours to handle problems relating to the building refrigeration, heating, hydronic, and piping needs.
- Makes recommendations for safety initiatives and programs, hiring and discipline, and addresses performance issues. Responsible for safety and policy enforcement.

Additional Physical Demands
1. Must adhere F&S safety and health policies by ensuring shop tools and equipment is functioning properly, monitoring personnel to assure safety and security policies are being followed, promote safe operations, and support departmental safety initiatives and programs. Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts.
2. Must be able to work amid hazards of work sites such as exposure to chemicals, radiation, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, animals, laboratories, coal fired power plant, and energized electrical equipment. Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required when hazards exist.
3. May work in extreme weather conditions and temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels
4. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to access any work area such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, and scaffolds. Must be able to work at heights on lifts, scaffolds, ladders of all types, and bucket truck for lengths of time.
5. Must be able to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily and the workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.
6. Works at the direction of the foreperson. Work is assigned through the work management group, service office, Superintendent of Building Maintenance, or Director of Building Maintenance or his designee in oral or written form. Must be able to work self-managed with limited supervision.
7. Must be able to interact with supervision, peers, employees, customers, and the campus community. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout campus.
8. Must be able to deliver tools, materials, and personnel to job site as needed operating a university vehicle.
9. The sub-foreperson is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services by exemplifying high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftspersonship, and dedication.
Minimum Qualifications
- Certificate of completion of Pipetrade apprenticeship under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program AND two (2) years (24 months) of applicable experience.
OR
Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Pipefitter or other Pipetrade classification, with a minimum of seven (7) years (84 months) of actual work in the trade, which may have included an apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Pipefitters, Pipefitter Welders, Refrigeration Mechanics, Temperature Control Mechanics, Sprinkler Fitters, and/or Oil Burner Mechanics.
- Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to effectively supervise others (plan, organize, prioritize, assign, and follow up on assignments.
- Thorough knowledge of use of pipefitter/refrigeration tools and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of and skills regarding refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of all refrigeration work and university facilities standards.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures.
- Ability to provide directions both orally and in written form that are concise and understandable. The ability work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
- Working knowledge of university procurement system.
- Working knowledge of computer programs including Outlook, AiM, Excel, Microsoft Word.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1962 - Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) Sub-Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is based on the prevailing wage which is currently $53.47/hour.
