Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the public’s health. The division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response; State Public Health Laboratory; Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch; Immunization Branch; Public Health Informatics, Reporting, Technology Branch; Refugee Branch; and Operations Branch. The Division exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events and disasters that impact the public’s health.
The Unit The Microbiology program exists to provide accurate scientific data and test results in regard to detection, identification, and typing of microorganisms of public health importance in clinical, animal, and environmental specimens using current microbiological and molecular methods. This program exists to ensure accurate and timely test results for support of patient diagnosis and environmental outbreaks, epidemiological investigations of communicable disease outbreaks, and rapid response to bioterrorism events; to provide the public with advice and consultation and; to provide reference, teaching, and consultation services for infectious diseases.
What You Will Be Doing This position works within the Microbiology program and conducts complex testing and analyses of specimens for the diagnosis of infectious diseases in accordance with existing methodologies.
Analytical Testing - Perform analytical testing techniques to identify pathogenic micro- organisms in clinical and surveillance specimens.
- Communication with submitters and/or CDPHE partners in order to resolve specimen inquiries or questions and facilitate specimen testing.
- Successful performance of high- complexity analytical testing, ensuring that all quality requirements and parameters are met in order to maintain regulatory compliance.
- Thorough and complete documentation of all testing activity according to established methods and protocols
General Laboratory Duties - Independently performs laboratory duties to support general laboratory operations within the Microbiology Department.
- Equipment and environmental monitoring and general lab cleaning and decontamination, as well as completion of instrument calibration and decontamination logs.
- Responsible for restocking departmental and work unit areas to facilitate efficient activities.
- Participation in monthly environmental monitoring to evaluate contamination risk within the work spaces.
Instrumentation - Operates, calibrates, and performs maintenance of applicable instrumentation.
- Operates a variety of analytical and non-analytical equipment to perform required testing duties and maintenance activities.
- Performs instrument troubleshooting with help from senior staff, supervisor, or work lead, as needed
- Identify and document instrument performance measures and errors.

Class Code & Classification Description: (New) C8D2XX LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY II
Minimum Qualifications Option 1 Five (5) years of full time professional experience* in a laboratory setting conducting high-complexity testing and performing diagnostic, research or regulated microbiological testing (e.g., CLIA, FDA, ISO).
OR Option 2 Bachelor's degree** from an accredited institution in science, biological science (e.g., microbiology, food microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry) or closely related degree
AND One (1) year of professional experience*in a laboratory setting conducting high-complexity testing and performing diagnostic, research or regulated microbiological testing (e.g., CLIA, FDA, ISO).
OR Option 3 An advanced degree* f rom an accredited institution in science, biological science (e.g., microbiology, food microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry) or closely related degree

Relevant years of State service contribute to a candidate's position-related knowledge, skill, ability, behavior or other posted competency should be considered as a preferred qualification and given weight under the process.
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent
- Knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology concepts, principles, and theories and their practical applications
- Experience performing the diagnosis and screening of infectious diseases
- Knowledge of and use of laboratory equipment such thermocyclers, autoclaves, and automated sample preparation equipment
- Experience or training using instruments for microbe identification via mass spectrometry.
- Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and instrumentation
- Equipment maintenance skills (performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed)
- Operation monitoring skills (watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly)
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with a wide range of customers
- Knowledge of generally accepted laboratory QA/QC procedures
- Knowledge of spreadsheet, database and word processing applications
- Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent planning and organizing skills
- Excellent analytical skills
