About Ascension Borgess Hospital Special Care Nursery (SCN) in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Size : 8-Bed Level II nursery with central monitoring within the Birthing Center (SCN ADC 0-3 newborns).
Respiratory : Bubble nasal CPAP, HHFNC, Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator (neo capable) for invasive ventilation (up to 24 hours). Respiratory therapists in-house 24/7.
Access : Peripheral IVs, UVCs (placement and maintenance for 24-48 hours). No PICCs.
Nutrition : IV Fluids. NG/OG Feeds. No TPN. Donor breast milk (20kcal and 24kcal from Bronson Milk Bank). Lactation consultants (3 IBCLCs on staff with one in-house everyday 7a-7p).
Pharmacy : Pharmacist in-house 24/7. Surfactant and prostaglandins available in-house if needed.
Laboratory : Specimens collected by SCN RNs or MD. Lab staffed 24/7 - blood gas and all other routine labs done in-house. Umbilical cord tissue drug testing send-out.
Imaging : X-ray (portable), upper GI series, ultrasound (head, renal, spine), echocardiogram.
Development : Occupational therapists (2) with neonatal training. Utilize NICU Follow-Up Clinic at Bronson Methodist Children's Hospital or Helen DeVos Childrens Hospital if needed.
Family Support : Banded caregivers (typically the mother and father) may board in an available patient room on the unit after the mother is discharged to allow for continued participation in their infants care.
Transfers : Bronson Children's Hospital NICU (Level III) in downtown Kalamazoo or Helen DeVos Childrens Hospital NICU (Level IV) in Grand Rapids.

Responsibilities:
Admit, evaluate, diagnose, perform history and physical exam and provide consultation for newborns.
Provide neonatal resuscitation using NRP guidelines, stabilize, evaluate and deliver quality postnatal
care to stable term newborns and infants 32 weeks gestation and 1500 grams. Provide care to infants
with physiologic immaturity or are moderately ill. Provide ventilation and oxygen support to newborns as
required for stabilization and treatment. Provide nutritional support and intravenous access for hydration
and treatment of metabolic and common infections of the newborn. Stabilize infants that are ill and
require a higher level of care including those less than 32 weeks, less than 1500 grams or require
surgery until they may be transferred to an appropriate level NICU.

8. Electrocardiogram initial interpretation
9. Nutritional support of newborn
10. Oxygen delivery and airway management
11. Pain management
12. Emergency aspiration of pneumothorax and chest tube insertion
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Required Credential(s):
Physician MD/DO with Prescriptive Authority credentialed from the Michigan Board of Medicine obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Credentialing done by Medical Staff department.
Education:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Optometry (OD) or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) required.
