POSITION SUMMARY

The compliance auditor is responsible for performing audits to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, internal policies, and industry best practices related to medications including controlled substances across the multi-facility integrated healthcare system. The compliance auditor works closely with the Director of Compliance in developing and executing compliance audit plans and works collaboratively with legal affairs, health-system quality office, pharmacy, nursing, law enforcement, and other departments to promote a culture of compliance and ensure the safe and secure handling of medications. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment, but will also include onsite audits in hospitals, clinics, research sites, and pharmacies in Dallas and Fort Worth. This position works under close supervision to provide professional auditing skills in the conduction of audits of various functions and activities of UT Southwestern. This role will work with the selected third-party Internal Audit partner to conduct less complex auditing assignments or segment of more complex audit to determine effectiveness of internal controls and compliance with established policies and procedures.

This job is located in Dallas, Texas with a hybrid work schedule working in the office three days a week (Monday and Wednesday required and one other day) and two days from home.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

REQUIRED

· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required; two (2) years of related professional experience required. 

· Completion of the Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Public Accountant, or Certified Information Systems Auditor preferred within a 2-year period from hire.

PREFERRED

· Minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting with a focus on controlled substance, pharmacy, or nursing preferred.

· Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or equivalent within 12 months of hire preferred.

· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

JOB DUTIES

· Identify potential risks related to medications and controlled substances and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.

· Assists in planning, conducting, and evaluating compliance audits to ensure effective and efficient compliance operations.

· Audit controlled substance transactions and security measures across multiple facilities and settings to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations and institutional policies and procedures.

· Perform audits on the recordkeeping, receiving, storage, dispensing, handling, and disposal of medications including controlled substances.

· Conduct audits of pharmacy operations to ensure adherence to state and federal regulations, institutional policies, and industry standards.

· Verify the accuracy of prescription records, drug dispensing procedures, and controlled substance handling.

· Evaluates effectiveness of management controls surrounding activities under audit and their compliance with all applicable university policies and procedures.

· Provides input for, and assists in, drafting of audit reports, including development of audit findings and recommendations for specific remedial actions.

· Prepares work papers to support work performed, findings, and recommendations included in audit reports.

· Collaborate with pharmacy, clinic, research, and healthcare management teams to develop, implement, and update policies and procedures related to medication and controlled substance management.

· Provide education and training to personnel regarding medication and controlled substance compliance policies and procedures.

· Assists or conducts investigations of alleged theft, misuse of funds, or other defalcations to determine their cause, extent of loss, and means of prevention.

· Maintains effective working relationships with internal audit and third-party Internal Audit partner personnel to achieve objectives of auditing assignments.

· Performs other duties as assigned.
