The Role
In early April of 2023, McKesson started up a new function within the Medical Surgical division called Data & Advanced Analytics. The focus of this organization is as follows -
- Develop a sustainable data strategy & resulting data model to support McKesson Med Surgical data science and democratization initiatives in partnership with our McKesson Technology department
- Develop short- and long-term data and advanced analytic road maps to align department competencies with business needs that drive value
- Leverage data science to drive cost efficiencies and grow revenue.
- Explore and deliver automation opportunities to drive efficiencies
- Develop literacy programs and drive data democratization across McKesson Med Surgical
- Develop and enable data governance practices for McKesson Med Surgical in partnership with our enterprise data governance team
We are seeking an experienced VP of Data Strategy and Democratization . This individual will play a pivotal role in shaping McKesson Medical Surgical’ s data strategy, building a high-performing data team to enable the department’s data science and democratization priorities. This individual will be responsible for informing and executing best-in-class data practices within a cloud environment across multiple technologies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Planning:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive data infrastructure strategy aligned with the organization's goals and objectives.
- Define and prioritize initiatives to advance data science, automation, and data democratization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into actionable plans.
2. Data Architecture and Governance:
- Inform the design and in partnership with IT implement a scalable, reliable, and secure data architecture to support data science initiatives and automation.
- Align with data governance team to ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Identify and work in partnership with IT to implement appropriate data storage, processing, and analytics technologies to meet the organization's needs.
3. Data Science Enablement:
- Work closely with data scientists and analysts to understand their requirements and provide the necessary tools, platforms, and infrastructure to enable their work.
- Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making by promoting best practices and providing guidance on data modeling, feature engineering, and experiment design.
4. Automation and Efficiency:
- Drive the adoption of automation tools, frameworks, and platforms to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
- Collaborate with IT and engineering teams to integrate data infrastructure with other systems and applications.
5. Data Democratization:
- Champion the democratization of data by developing self-service analytics capabilities and promoting data access and literacy across the organization.
- Enable business users to access, analyze, and visualize data through intuitive and user-friendly tools and interfaces.
- Establish data training programs and provide ongoing support to empower employees to make data-informed decisions.
6. Team Leadership:
- Build and lead a high-performing team of data engineers, architects, and administrators.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to team members.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes innovation, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing.
7. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with executive leadership, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to understand their data needs and align data infrastructure initiatives with their objectives.
- Communicate the value and impact of data infrastructure investments to key stakeholders.
- Present updates, progress reports, and recommendations to senior management.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
10+ years of practical experience in setting data engineering & data strategy for large organization
Critical Skills
- Deep understanding of data engineering concepts, tools, and technologies, as well as advanced analytics techniques
- Ability to lead and manage a team of data professionals ensuring that they are aligned with the organization's goals and delivering high-quality results in partnership with both the product, automation and data science teams
- A solid understanding of business principles and operations and ability to data strategies with organizational goals to drivE business value from data initiatives.
- Understanding of data governance frameworks and best practices, as well as relevant legal and regulatory requirements
- Ability to manage and drive change within the organization
- Ability to translate business needs into data-driven solutions
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities to identify and address data-related challenges, as well as to drive continuous improvement in data engineering processes and data democratization efforts
- Ability to effectively plan, execute, and monitor data engineering projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and with the desired outcomes
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and build consensus among stakeholders.
- Processes a strong commitment to continuous learning staying up to date with the latest technology trends and advancements
Education
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, information systems, or a related field required. Advanced degree strongly preferred.
- A strong foundation in data management principles is essential.
- Advanced degree or certification in data engineering, data management, or data analytics
- Business education or experience & additional certifications in relevant technologies and methodologies.
- Practical experience and demonstrated skills in data engineering, data strategy, and data democratization strongly weighted in evaluating candidates for this role.

As part of Total Rewards, we are proud to offer a competitive compensation package at McKesson. This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. In addition to base pay, other compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities may be offered.
Our Base Pay Range for this position
$198,400 - $330,600
