Support NRL MW CalVal and DA Trial Efforts

1) MW CalVal Support

A.     Provide broad technical support, software development, and perform technical analysis as required for the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) DoD Microwave (MW) Sensors Calibration and Validation (CalVal) efforts. Tasks include:

Analysis of microwave remote sensing system.

Pre-flight specifications and characterizations of microwave radiometer systems, Sensor specific ground processing software systems,

Post-launch calibration and validation of spaced based MW radiometric data,

Data Assimilation (DA) trials to support the transition of the observed MW radiances and products into Navy NWP DA systems and models.

A.     Specific MW sensors and programs include:

Current DMSP SSMIS and STP-H8 COWVR/TEMPEST missions,

Upcoming Air Force WSF-M (WSF-M) MW Imager (MWI),  Multiple MW CubeSat CalVal efforts,

Perform forecast sensitivity impact assessments of the following missions: NOAA JPSS, HyMS, SMBA, QuickSounder, GEMS and MSSIS sounding systems and other passive and active MW sensors, such as the ISRO ScatSat program.

B.     Assist in developing, planning, architecture design, and implementation of the software system for validating space-based Ocean Surface Wind Seed and Wind Vector (OSWS/OSWV) measurements in a general purpose OSWS/OWSV Validation Toolkit.

C.    Assist in the implementation, testing and troubleshooting of the MWI ground data processing system (GDPS) on the NRL CALVAL Linux cluster and support the transition to FNMOC’s Linux cluster.

2) Advanced Satellite Data Support

A.     Technical support for NRL’s Advanced Variational DA System for transitioning satellite sensor data into operations; including developing, implementing, and conducting impact assessments of new satellite sensors into a variational assimilation framework for NWP.

B.     Specific short-term tasks include the integration and enhancing the use of current and future MW sensors (SSMIS UPP, MWI, COWVR, TEMPEST, TROPICS, GEMS, HyMS, JPSS ATMS, SMBA, QuickSounder, MSSIS, and AMSR-3).

3) Advanced GPS RO Assimilation Support

A.     Technical support to expand the GPS RO assimilation capability in the NRL’s Advanced Variation DA System using NAVGEM, including expanding the one dimensional forward and tangent linear operator to two dimensions and assessing the impact of such a change.

B.     Use airborne GPS RO from the Atmospheric River Reconnaissance for the experiment and impact assessment.
