The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs. Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.
What You'll Do:
The Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection has the important mission to protect and promote the physical and environmental health of the people of Ohio. ODH strives to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure to the public through effective licensing, registration, inspection, enforcement, and emergency response. This position will support the mission by inspecting facilities that use x-ray equipment and businesses that install x-ray equipment in Ohio. This inspector will travel throughout Southwestern Ohio, primarily in the Cincinnati area and surrounding counties, to perform inspections of x-ray machines at facilities.
Key duties include:
- using various radiation measuring instruments, evaluates independently the production, use, transfer, disposal and/or presence of ionizing radiation from any device or equipment that emits, or is capable of emitting ionizing radiation which would have an effect on public health
- determines radiation exposure to the patient, operator, ancillary staff, and public by performing accurate measurements of radiation levels using a variety of radiation detection instruments and quality control tools to determine compliance with applicable rules and/or standards
- assists staff in all aspects of the radiologic technology section's duties (i.e., performs registration, licensure, state x-ray inspections, routine investigations, Health Care Facility inspections, federal contract/agreement inspections such as the FDA Partnership Agreement and Mammography Quality Standards Act inspections to determine compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code and CFR Title 21)
- lifts and carries survey equipment (up to 40 pounds) and works out-of-doors in all weather conditions and ability to traverse uneven terrain
- writes, using a personal/laptop computer (PC), inspection reports from data collected
- researches and compiles information (e.g., review licensure and registration files) to assist the program supervisor's response to public inquiries, business associates, government officials, healthcare providers, suppliers, attorneys and the media

Qualifications Completion of undergraduate core program in health physics, nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation physics, radiation sciences, bionucleonics, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or physics; must be able to provide own transportation.
-Or NRRPT, CHP, NMTCB or ARRT certification; must be able to provide own transportation.
-Or Completion of Navy nuclear school: must be able to provide own transportation.
-Or 2 years of full-time experience working with one of following: radioactive materials, analysis of radioactive materials in environment, decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials, radiation- generating equipment, experience that deals with regulatory requirements that involves radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials or radiologic health and safety; must be able to provide own transportation.

Preferred Qualifications: Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria: - Undergraduate or advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, radiation physics, radiation sciences, bionucleonics, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or physics
- experience providing consultation or technical assistance to customers in a regulatory setting
- Experience in x-ray registration and inspection
- Experience determining compliance regarding x-ray regulations
- Three years of experience with ionizing x-ray equipment in healthcare settings
- Experience in assisting in developing and testing of guidance or procedures for x-ray related programs
- Experience with computer software (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Regi, Share Point)
- Experience mentoring staff in the safe use of x-ray equipment
- Radiation related Certification (e.g., American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT)
